Cannot read data DVD
I have a strange problem. I recently tried to install a game on DVD (DVD-ROM) and when I put the disc in the drive, well, basically nothing happens. I can hear it start to spin up as though it's trying to be read, but it just chokes and starts from the beginning again. (This happens about 5 times before it goes silent.). When, in Windows Explorer, I double click to open the drive there is nothing there, as though the disc is empty (There is no custom icon either). Also, even if there isn't a disc inserted I can still open the drive in Windows Explorer - which is odd, no error message telling me to insert a disc etc..

BUT, the computer can still read CDs and DVD movies, so I can't see how it could be a problem with the laser that reads DVDs. Now, you may be thinking well, it's just a faulty disc, but no! I've tried it in another computer and it works fine. (And anyway, it worked fine in my computer the first time I used it just after I bought it) Also, when I come to think about it, I tried to load some other DVDs that I'd burned and they didn't work either.

Things I've done to try and fix it myself include uninstalling and reinstalling the drive in the device manager, trying to load the DVD in safe mode, pressing F5 while the disc tries to load, removing the upper and lower filters in the registry and reinstalling the system ASPI (which Nero InfoTool reported as being corrupt), all to no avail! I also checked the computer manufacturers website for updated drivers but there weren't any.
I definitely have a drive that can (or used to able to) read data DVDs and the game is definitely made for PC

I'm using a laptop - a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M3438G running Windows XP SP2. The make of the DVD drive is _NEC DVD_RW ND_6750A
The game in question is Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe, if that helps.
Thanks in advance!

Well, I'd heard about Force ASPI and had tried it before to no avail. I tired again after reinstalling it - still no luck. But installing that has stopped Nero from displaying a message about an incorrectly installed ASPI layer.

It's doesn't seem to be the disk that's the problem - it works fine in other computers. But I cleaned it anyway and still nothing.

Firmware?

"Q: What would happen if illegal Firmware copies were used?
A: Optical drives are high-precision products. Usage environment and dispersion of parts characteristics will dramatically change performance. To absorb these dispersions and maintain the best performance, unique parameters are set up on every drive at each stage of production. Using illegal F/W copies may change these parameters. In such case, writing and reading performance could deteriorate, even though your drive works normally. We at NEC strongly urge you not to use such illegal copies."

Firmware available at above link.
