thanks for all your help. i tried one cassette and played it back through my stereo speakers and it sounded great.

Good to hear, I wondered how it went (might want to mark the thread "Solved"). Whether you ended up using your desktop instead, or the laptop's mono just wasn't a game killer for you, glad it worked out!
