it tells me i need plus analog recorder but microsoft says it no longer has that and to click here. i did and cannot find anything. did connect the rca red and black cable to my cassette player which does not have the rca connection. used an rca with one end a male and the other end red and black and put those into a converter to insert the one prong into the input jack. still no sound comes out of my laptop. checked youtube vids and sound is fine with those, so my volume and speaker is fine.

You could also use a free sound recording like Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net). If you use this sound recording software, you can touch up the audio (raise volume, clear some static areas) and even export to mp3.

thanks for the tips. i hit record in audacity, let my tape run for about 5 minutes, saved it, opened it in audacity, hit play and no sound. i can see a running time on the screen with a vertical line going from left to right. i just cannot seem to get sound from the casette player to run through my laptop and out my laptop speaker.

In the recording properties for your sound card do you have Line In selected?

In Control Panel click on "Sounds and Audio Devices". Then click on the "Audio" tab. Now click on the button that says "Volume" under "Sound Recording" and a box will pop up where you make your selection. Also make sure the slider for the volume is up. If line in is not one of the options then click on the "Options" button then "Properties" and make sure it's ticked.

tried it and get choice of stereo mix or microphone. choosing either one or the other and then options, properties the choices are playback or recording. no choice of line in anywhere. all volume levers are at highest point.

I did this a few years ago, using an old sony walkman, used a splitter (available at Radio shack) and plugged in headphones with the cable on the other port on the splitter, before it was put into the computer microphone port. Worked great for us.
Later burned the music to cds. All this done with Audacity.
