Have been fighting this problem for 3 full days and not finding a solution. I cannot access my dvd burner from any program that is capable of burning disks.
Problem started out of the blue three days ago while attempting to burn a SVCD. The program could not find any burning devises. Have used this program for quite some time without fail. Attempted to burn it in other apps, no go. Nero will only allow to a image file on hard disk, can see no other burning devises. Got an error message about burnrights.......googled it, checked for authorization to burn(home pc, only user, as administrator!!) was set properly. Goofed with it for hours, including deleting it and all of nero, ran a reg cleaner and manually checked for any remnants, set the rights, reinstalled the whole mess at least 5 times to no avail. I do not get burnright warnings, but program still cannot see my burner.
Uninstalled every program I could possibly think of that might interfere with the dvd drive, cleaned the reg, re booted lord knows how many times.....still no go in ANY program.
Devise manager see's both of my drives, a cd/dvd rom, and the burner drive, claims all is working properly, all drivers are installed properly. no newer drivers are available for either drive.
Got to the point where I had run out of options, thought maybe the burner itself had given up(a Plextor 760a...have had numerous Plextors go bad, never gonna waste my money on one of their products again BTW!!) and just went out and bought a new drive.......an LG..........same problem.
Noticed another problem too........for some strange reason I cannot use system restore(running XP sp2).......no matter what I do. No restore points are available(which made me think virus, but after running every virus/spyware 'gram known to modern man, none are found, and system runs fast and stable in every other way) . I even went as far as reinstalling system restore, files from Microsoft's web site, and still will not allow me to set a restore point. Tells me that system restore is set to off, which it is not, and never has been. I have removed and installed system restore a dozen times, even in safe mode, even from command prompt, problem still exists. Found the problem when one of my spyware programs, Webroot, popped up a message saying it could not set a restore point because system restore was set to off!!!
Both of my drives show up in devise manager, and both show in my computer. The dvd burner shows as a cd devise in my computer, but I believe that is just xp's doing, not a problem. Here is another strange problem the machine is displaying........both drives can read either a cd or dvd, and display the contents correctly. Both drives can play either fine too. When I put a blank disc in either drive, cd or dvd new media, I get an error message saying devise is unavailble. Locks my computer for 2 minutes or so while spinning the disks. Remove the disks, put in any disk with metrial on it, they can read it.
Please help if you can, do not know what else to do at this point and ready to rip my hair out and set fire to the pc.....lol.........

Have you had any luck, the only thing I have found so far was to format the hard disk and start again, I reckon that's a bit extreme, but if things don't get resolved soon, I might have to do that. If you figure it out could you be so kind as to post it here as I would be most interested.
I use DVD shrink a fair bit usually with Nero 6 or 7 I too have uninstalled everything, even tried different burning programs to no avail, it's really frustrating
Regards Pete | | Junior Member with 8 posts. | | Join Date: Jun 2009 Experience: Intermediate | | I did figure it out.........took a week of scouring the net, but found the friggin little culprit!!! It is a nasty virus, very well written, and near impossible to find. Stumbled upon it by reading a thread on Malwarebyte's web site. Had to use a little tool that they wrote to find the bugger and remove it, and then when the .sys file was exposed and dispatched, the other remnants become visible to the normal virus scanners.
The little FVCKR disables System Restore, routes all spyware and virus programs around it's .sys file, changes the drive letters on optical drives 20 times a second, and is self mutating, changing it's file names on a regular basis. When I rid myself of that sum boitch, every thing went back to normal!!!
Found it by accident..........when attempting to use another burner program, I recieved an error message about exceeding the number of personal secrets that can be keep on one system. Did a google on that error, found the post at Malwarebyte's, written by one of their staff, downloaded their free little program.........rootrepeal..........a system root wonder of a program. It identified the affending .sys file, and with the instructions provided in the thread where I found that, I was able to nuke the little bastage!!!!
As a note.........after I cleaned it all out, I put it back into the system, just to see if my virus/spyware programs could find it if I pointed them to it........NONE could.............NONE...........and I have them all!!!!! After removing the .sys file that controls it, I ran the programs again, and none could find the support files either.........I installed Malwarebytes anti malware program, the latest edition..........and it found them..........and was able to remove them when none of my other's could. I am now a Malwarebyte customer for life!!!! I run a good spyware/virus program, and the Malwarebyte anti Mlaware too...........the spware/virus 'grams cannot find the malware stuff when the 'byte's program can!!! Learn something new every day IIII guess.
If ya cant find the thread I'm talking about, post here and I will steer you to it...........should be able to find it again...........and get the Malwarebytes stuff........MBAMW as they call it.........with it, and a good virus program, I know I'm clean!!!!!

I have downloaded Spyware Doctor - it won't load, requires an update that won't load, even patched it from their help site, still no good. Downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-malware, it won't load or run, downloaded Stopzilla, it won't update, downloaded Dr Web's Cureit, it won't run at all.
If you could send me that link, or thread, I would really appreciate it, I am just about ready to scream......
Thanks in anticipation

#13 | Jethro53, I have the MSIVXserv.sys file which Rootrepeal has picked up but it is hidden and cannot be deleted. It also has another longwinded name: MSIVXnoodsmlhosewnmupqetxdajnkhagx.sys Is this the same one you had. I cannot get onto Malwarebytes site as this virus seems to be blocking certain connections. Could you PM me with your e-mail address so I can resolve this nasty. Thankyou. | | Junior Member with 8 posts. | | Join Date: Jun 2009 Experience: Intermediate |
