Unhappy Burned CD not reading in drive
One of my friends was over my house earlier, burning some of her image files to a disc for me, and everything works perfectly fine in hers, but when I put the CD in my own drive, the computer recognizes that there's data on it, but nothing will show up.
Here are some screen shots of the problem:

http://i26.tinypic.com/2nbbyab.jpg - in the sidebar, it says there's used space.

http://i25.tinypic.com/25gs40x.jpg - But says 0 bytes once you click on the drive.

She's using Windows Vista's drag and drop method to burn CDs, I have Windows 98 and my burning method uses Nero. Could this be a cross-platform problem? This is the second time it's done this and the third disc gone to waste. I know that it's not the actual disc because everything works perfectly fine whenever I burn data to them (my discs were able to be read by Windows Vista on another friend's PC), and the disc she made worked fine on hers too. The files are not hidden.

I have two CD drives- one is an external Memorex CD burner and the other is the main CD drive installed in the computer. I've tried it on both with no luck. Help explain what's wrong please?

Is she burning the discs as multi-session instead of single session? It's been a while since I used Windows 98 but I seem to recall that it may have had problems reading multi-session discs even if they only had one session on them.

Thank you for the quick reply, but I think I've just stumbled upon an answer to my own question while looking for an answer to yours.

Like I've stated before, we were using the drag-and-drop, which, according to the help article, burns the files in Live file system format. So does that means that they can only be read in newer versions of Windows? That would explain why they aren't working.

From what I have read about Vista's drag-and-drop CD writing, it is a UDF file system. It is possible to enable reading UDF formatted CDs within Windows 98 but the CD drive itself has to support it. Look about half way down on this page for more info:

How to troubleshoot common problems that occur when a Windows 98-based or Windows Millennium Edition-based computer cannot read a CD or a DVD.

FWiW, I would not trust using UDF disc burning with any files I consider the least bit irreplaceable. I have seen too many posts here where people would loose access to previously burned files when they tried to add more files
