Question DVR Vip 612 to External HD to Computer to DVD?
I have Dish Network with a Vip 612 DVR box. I'm constantly deleting recorded content to make room for new stuff, and it's growing tiresome so I'm considering getting an external hard drive to increase my storage space. Their website suggests Seagate brand hard drives to hookup via USB 2.0. I'm willing to pay their one time fee and buy the hard drive, but I am just curious if anyone knows if when one transfers the recordings to the hard drive, can I just take it and hook up the USB to my computer and burn the recordings to DVD, or are they encrypted and require some kind of software to do so?

Did you call Dish to confirm that the external hard drive will work with the DVR? Satellite providers can install their own version of software on DVRs that control which features are available. They can also answer whether or not content is encrypted.
