"problem with sound device"
My computer had 'multiple windows errors' so I installed a new version of Windows. I have not changed any hardware. If I now try and play anything, music or film, through Windows Media Player, this message appears:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

The previous system was able to play music/films through WMP with no problems. Please help me if you are able to. Is it just a software issue that I can rectify through installation?

Thanks a lot for any help you can provide.

Did you reinstall your sound drivers after reinstalling Windows?

Thank you for your assistance. I have still not managed to resolve my problem yet. I do not believe that I specifically installed the sound drivers. In trying to work this out, I have discovered two things:

1. Under Device Manager, 'Other devices' lists a 'Multimedia Audio Controller'. Could this be interferring with my sound card/drivers?

2. System Information does list a sound device. I have not changed any hardware, just re-installed Windows as stated. Does this mean that my computer is simply not recognising a sound device?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If you reinstalled windows, then you will also need to install your sound drivers. Your computer is listing your sound card as "multimedia audio controller". Did you receive any driver discs, or motherboard cds with your computer? If so, put it in, then follow the prompts looking for anything that says install drivers, then sound or audio.

If not, please list your computer make and model so that we can assist you with finding the proper drivers?

Thanks for the advice. After trying a multitude of CDs, I cannot solve the problem.

My computer is an Advent 3216 with Windows XP Home Edition. Is that all the information required or would more help?

I found the following on the Tech Guys website but wasn't sure which was sound device specific:

I am happy to use another site if you'd recommend it.
