importing muisc frm data disc to itunes
good evening - hope someone can help as im so desperate now!
i have just bought an apple ipod 120gb. i have downloaded itunes but having no joy in transferring music from my many data discs.
doesnt recognise the disc at all. i have been able to locate the disc from the 'add to library' but im unable to actually import the songs/albums etc. there is no 'import' import button to click etc.
i seem to get the music into the itunes library but as soon as i eject the data disc and try to play any tracks its tells me that it is unable to play as unable to locate the file???? something along those lines. i assume by this i havent imported the songs at all but just playing the disc only!!
really need help please.

kind regards

You need to properly set-up iTunes. If you haven't set it up, its probably still in its default settings.

So when you added songs from your discs, it now shows up in iTunes, but it didn't copy the songs from the disc to your hard drive. Thus, when play the song while the disc is removed, it cannot locate the actual song to play because it is looking for the disc.

Go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced" in your Menu bar in iTunes. Make sure you check
"Let iTunes oganize your library" and "Copy Files to iTunes Folder." Once those are enabled, everything will work seamlessly.

Once you've done the above, delete the all the song in iTunes and do the "add folder to library" bit again. This time when it imports, it will actually copy the songs to your hard drive and keep everything organized in one central location.

Dear Parasolution - thanku very much for you advice. im still stuck. im not very computer literate .
i have done what you asked but the only thing i found that i could check was 'copy files to itune media folder when adding to library'.
I couldnt find anything else. I have vista would that have anything to do with it? One thing i discovered by accident is that when the songs are displayed in the library ,if i hightlite and right clike the song or songs , and option to convert to aac format is available. By clicking that it copies or imports the song. But it means i have to delete the original ones which is a bit of a pain as it doesnt show which is the imported one.
further advice or help will be very appreciated.
kind regards

First thing first, you should start from scratch and delete all the songs that are currently in your iTunes library. This will make things much easier. Once you've done that then do the step below to make sure iTunes will organize your song imports.

The 2 items to check are: "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to itune media folder when adding to library." Both are located in "Edit - > Preferences -> Advanced Menu."

Once you've completed the above step, close iTunes. Now you can import your songs.
I am assuming your songs are all in MP3 format and are just being stored on data discs. If so, click on "Start" button in VIsta and open your "Music" folder. There you will find the iTunes folder. Double click on the iTunes folder to open and double click on the iTunes Music folder to open. Now just drag all your songs from the discs to the iTunes music folder. Once you are done, start iTunes. When iTunes starts, it will take a bit because it will find music in the music folder and it will automatically organize. Once it is complete, then its ready.

The other method is to go to 'File -> Add Folder to Library" command. But this may take long depending on how you've got the music organized on your data discs.

Vista has nothing to do with the problem, the problem is basically getting iTunes set-up correctly. You don't want to import the songs by converting them to AAC if the files are your disc are already in MP3 format. Without going into details, you'll just be losing quality during the conversion/import.
