Unhappy No Sound HP Pavillion a1123c
Hello,

My girlfriend "inherited" the above PC from her parents. It was running Windows Media Center, so I reformatted and installed Win XP Pro SP2. I installed all the drivers and Device Manager is happy. However, there is no sound whatsoever. The little speaker icon does not show up in the system tray. I downloaded the audio drivers from Realtek (High Def audio driver).

I checked that the cables were seated correctly to the mobo. I uninstalled the audio drivers from Device Manager, and on restart, they installed again. No joy. I went to HP's support website (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...114262&lang=en) and followed all the instructions there. Still no joy.

Could anyone please give me any advice on how to get sound on this bloody computer?

Thank you in advance.

Here is the support and downloads site for the HP Pavilion a1123c desktop.

I suggest you save this site in your browser favorites list for future use.

According to the hardware specs site for that desktop, it has Realtek ALC880 High Definition Audio.

You can download the current driver version (5.10.0.5969) for XP from here.

Dowwnload and save it, close all open windows, install it, then restart.

What's listed in the Device Manager in the Sound Video And Game Controllers menu?

So sorry for the late reply on this issue. Please see the attachment, as it will show all the device in the Sounds drop-down in device manager. Thank you.

Looks like it should be ok, was the sound working before you rebuilt it? Are the speakers/headphone you are using definitely ok in another device?

Is there a chance the XP Pro CD you have is a pre-configured one, it could be that the Windows Audio Service is disabled by default on your build.

You can check easy enough in Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services then look for Windows Audio Service - It should be started with a startup type of automatic, if not double click it change the startup type and then Start the Service.

Sound was working fine before rebuild. Headphones I used work on my laptop like a charm. Windows Audio Service is enabled. There is no small speaker icon in the system tray.

XP Pro Cd is from MSDNAA so I don't think it is pre-configured.

You could have the UAA problem documented here. Try this link, it's for SP3 but may also work for SP2 or you could upgrade to SP3...

Hope that helps
