Smile CD/DVD not found, update BIOS, ok, then gone again!
Hi all! I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for awhile and am hoping someone here might have an idea. I already talked to Dell and the were of very little help!

I have a Dell Studio Laptop, running Win7 64bit.

My CD/DVD drive/burner is frequently "lost" when I try to use it. I first noticed it when I tried to eject a CD one time and got no response from the eject button. When I checked "Computer" it didn't show the drive at all. I had used the drive about 30 mins earlier and it was fine. Dell Support had me update BIOS and it worked okay.

However, the same thing happened the next day. I updated the BIOS again (it stated I already had the BIOS's most updated version, but I went thru with it anyway). The drive was found again and all was okay. BUT, it continues to happen. If I go to use the drive after being on the computer for awhile, the drive can't be found and doesn't detect CD/DVD's that are in it. A reboot doesn't help, but if I go thru the whole BIOS update again, I am okay, but only for a little while.

One thing that may or may not have contributed to this is the upgrade to Win 64bit from Vista 64bit. Although the drive worked for a while after I did the upgrade, I never had the problem when I still had Vista.

Any ideas of what I could try next!? Thanks SO much!!

Try this:

1. Press Windows R, type regedit and press enter.

2. Open the Registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters and LowerFilters (UpperFilters.bak and LowerFilters.bak entries can be ignored)., and then click Delete.

4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry

5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.

6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry (If present....but most of the time it's not present ).

7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
