Solved: missing registry files=no sound
I have been having some malware issues, and received phenomenal help from one of the members (Eddie5659) in that forum. I am now clear of malware, but still having a sound issue. I can hear sounds when I play a file that is hosted on the computer, like itunes, etc., and can hear all the test sounds in the directx sound tester. When I try to play a video on google, youtube, etc, there is no sound.. I do not have any system sounds either.

I think it is related to missing registry files. When I run regedit on my wifes computer, or my laptop, in the drivers32 file are multiple entries, including midimapper and wavemapper. when I run regedit on my computer, in the drivers32 file ther eis only one entry titled "default" and no value set for it. Don't worry, I have never done anything other then look with regedit, since I don't really know what a registry is.

I have searched online for 2 weeks without luck for a fix for this.

any help would be appreciated.

I am running windows xp, service pack 3 on a dell vostro 200.

Go into the Device Manager, then click the + in Sounds Video And Game Controllers, then advise what's listed in that heading.

What's the service tag number for that Dell Vostro 200?

Is this your computer?

From what I can determine at this time without the service tag number and device manager information, it has either

Realtek ALC888 High Definition Audio

or

Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer.

According to service tag number 97YSLD1, here is the Dell support and software site that's specific to your Dell Vostro 200 desktop. I suggest that you save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

Here is the audio driver at the Dell site that's available for the Realtek ALC888 High Definition Audio in that desktop. It's version 5.10.0.5408 and is dated 09/10/2007.

A much newer version is available here. It's version 5.10.0.6029 and is dated 01/22/2010. I just recently installed it in one of my desktops. It'll place a Realtek high definition audio manager applet in the Control Panel so you can make setting changes to your liking.

Hopefully, installing an updated audio driver will solve your problem.

(Note: Read the screen carefully during the install process. In some cases, the driver has to be installed twice and the computer restarted after each install. The first install removes the old driver and the second install adds the new driver.)

If installing an updated driver didn't get the sound working right, then I don't know what the problem is without having a "hands on" with that computer.

Uncheck the box and click Apply, then recheck the box and click Apply, then see if the icon appears in the taskbar. Also, make sure that "hide inactive icons" is not selected.

would a reinstall have resolved the malware issue too?

if so, then yes, i wasted a good deal of your valuable time.

still, after receiveing your free help, and under the theory of "pay it forward", I have now started to volunteer my time with a disadvantaged youth. so it was not a complete waste.

Yep, it would. Most times it can be done like that, unless its a deep rootkit.

However, I prefer never to go down that route unless there are no other choices.

And don't worry about the time, this is my hobby so I enjoy doing it

Glad to hear about the volunteering side, I hope its very rewarding, which I'm thinking it will be
