Solved: Deleted iTunes music by mistake - please help!
Hi everyone, I recently transferred all of my iTunes music to a NAS drive to reduce the overhead on my PC hard disk, and this morning I accidentally deleted all of the files - I thought that the iTunes library was just pointing to all of the music in the old C: location, as every tune had an exclamation mark next to it, so I deleted them, but they have now disappeared off of my NAS box (Western Digital My Book World).

They are not in my Recycle Bin on the desktop, where could they be so that I can restore them back?

Thanks for reading, please help - this is over 4 years of music that has vanished!!

Redownload them? Does iTunes allow them to be redownloaded?
This is why I don't use it.

Why not try Spotify (Google and download it). It streams music, mostly any music, for free via your internet. It is legal, you pay for the music by their adverts.

Sorry if I was no help, but always backup on an external.

Thanks both - I could redownload but there is over 40GB missing - it would take an age, plus I don't have a list of everything I have ever owned! I have tried Spotify but I use iTunes for my iPod, so I can have my music on the move.

etaf - there is no recycle bin function as far as I can see - I have a Western Digital My Book World 1TB NAS drive, I can't see a recycle bin function in the admin console and there is no mention in the manual.

Having googled this problem, a few sites mention taking the drive apart and transferring the internal disk to a PC, but I don't want to void the warranty if I can help it. I guess my question changes slightly now - firstly, is there software available I can use to try and recover what was lost, and secondly, what software can I use to stop this happening again... if the NAS box is ultimately where my iTunes is going to reside I don't want to run the risk of losing it all again!

Thanks for reading

The best thing to do here is to backup and make another copy of all the files
even if you have software - if the harddrive fails you will lose every thing

have a look at this post

Elvandil has listed a vast number of recovery software programs - free and pay for

Brilliant - thanks! I have managed to recover some files from my ipod using a program called Sharepod, although it has created a number of duplicates - are there any recommendations on software that can analyse a set of folders, report on what could be duplicate and then allow me to choose what to delete?

EDIT: Already asked this question a while back - and found the answer again. Problem pretty much solved - thanks for your help!
