I recently installed windows 7 32 bit ultimate and now my hp dvd writer 1040d will now longer burn. It was working great with xp. does anyone know where i can get a driver that would work for this burner on windows 7? thanks

No drivers are needed nor should ever be installed for optical drives.

Right-click the drive in explorer, choose Properties. Is there a Recording tab present?

I have the same optical external drive you do. I am using Windows 7 64-bit. It does not require drivers (and none were provided). Try plugging the drive into another USB port. Try another computer. If nothing works, the drive is bad.

Hey RedDragon,

Try to use the Burn and Playing DVD/BluRay/CD trouble shooter, and see if any results come up. To do so:

Open the Playing and Burning CDs, DVDs, and Blu‑ray Discs troubleshooter by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. In the left pane, click View all, and then click Playing and Burning CDs, DVDs, and Blu‑ray Discs.

Let me know if any results pop up, or if you identify a fix.

Cheers,
Kim
