Wireless is Slow on my computer only
I am using a Windows 7 64-bit machine to connect to the internet. I'm using a Netgear WNR834M Wireless Router.

With the hard line to the modem, speedtest.net gives me around 22 Mbps. With the hard line through the wireless router, I also get the same.

Wirelessly, I get around 0.5, but my girlfriend's Win XP computer is getting around 19-21.

Any ideas why there's a huge slowdown in wireless connectivity with my machine?

Do you have the latest wireless driver (from the laptop manufacturer's web site if an integrated adapter)?

Thanks I'll try that this afternoon. Side note though, when I use my iPhone 3GS I have the same problem. ATT with 4/5 bars is about 4mbps but switching on wireless is about .5.

I have an 11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II
Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Driver Date: 3/9/2010
Driver Version: 2013.0.309.2010

I don't see an upgrade to that. I believe I have the latest version.

The fact that the phone is also slower on wireless compared to regular 3g also bothers me. It's weird.

But since another computer is getting near maximum speed it doesn't seem to be "simply" a defective router.

What encryption are you using? Have you tried with encryption disabled?

It's WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] for the security encryption.

The other options I guess are either one of those by themselves, I guess, or none. I don't know why that would affect the speed for some and not all?

Other details:
the router is on Channel 6.
---Of Channels 01-11
The mode is 11b/g/Next(20-40 MHz)
---And the other option for Mode is just 11b/g

Thanks so much for trying to help so far! I really appreciate it.

For the Windows 7 please attach a screen shot of the Networks page of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector.

Try channels 1, 8 and 9 to see if there is any improvement. Does the XP get all that potential interference, or is it more isolated?

Tried a couple other channels already, just tried these to no avail. But yeah, just speedtested the XP computer right now and it was at around 12Mbps whereas this one was again at 0.5.

Anyone have any other ideas? I'm still kind of confused.
