I borrowed a netbook from a friend to take on vacation .
It is a Dell Inspiron Mini 1011 running XP SP3
My router is a WRT54GS.
I can connect to the router with my Vista laptop with no problems.
I can connect to the router with a cat cable using the netbook.
The netbook sees a strong signal from my router all the time, but will not connect.
Occasionally it will connect for a moment, but then disconnects.
Please help.

Click Start - Run, then type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

When the services window appears, maximize it so you can see the list more clearly.

Scroll down to Wireless Zero Configuration

It should have its "startup type" set on Automatic.

If it doesn't, double-click it to open its properties window.

Change the "startup type" to Automatic, then click Apply - OK.

After that's done, restart the computer.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties - Hardware - Device Manager.

Click the + in Network Adapters

There should be entries for both the wired and wireless devices.

What's the name of the wireless device?

Double-click the wireless device to open its properties window.

Click the "Driver" tab.

What's listed for driver date and driver version?

There should be a sticker with a 7-character service tag number.

What's that number?

Wireless Zero is started and set to automatic.
Wireless device is Dell Wireless 1510 Wireless-N Mini-Card.
Driver Date is 10/22/2008
Version is 5.10.38.26
Service tag is 1VM65K1
I had already downloaded the driver from Dell and re-installed it.
It was the same version that was already on the netbook.

Here is the Dell support site that's specific only to your friend's Dell Inspiron Mini 10v(1011) netbook.

It should be added and saved in the browser favorites/bookmarks list so it can be readily be referred to when needed.

Yes. I did download and reinstall that driver. I have been to the Dell support site and went through their help site. Did not really find anything I had not done or checked out before.

Is the WIFI controlled by Dell's Wireless configuration or By Windows Wireless Zero Configuration? If the WIFI connection is controlled by both that can causes connection issues. Disable the Dell WIFI connection manager and only allow Wireless Zero Configuration to manage the connection.

I have tried it both ways, but still not able to connect.
Still shaking my head as to why it will connect for a moment and then disconnect.
