We had issues with our internet speed so I called BT they assure me it'll be fixed within 10 days, someone comes out today to work on the line and then the trouble really begins.
Previous to this 'help' we would have 2 laptops and any smartphones able to use our wireless broadband. As soon as the man "fixes" the line, every device apart from my HP laptop can connect to the internet.
I'm writing this on my dad's Samsung which still works fine.
After running the diagnostics I am told that dns server is not responding, so I search the internet for solutions and try every thing from switching off the router to getting involved with the command prompt section of technology which seems far beyond my capabilities, it just feels wrong to be messing about in there with no clue what i'm doing.
I've exhausted my computer knowledge and am hoping someone out there has a solution for me!!

Start with TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or Windows 7. It won't hurt and might solve the problem

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands (Bold), each followed by the Enter key:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reboot the machine.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use Notepad or WordPad to save as a text document, then use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk with a working computer to transfer the text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Not sure what that DNS Server IP number is. Was expecting the same IP as your Gateway and DHCP IP.

Check to be sure that "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is checked in TCP/IP Properties.

Network and Sharing Center
Click "View status" to the right of Wireless network Connection.
Bottom of the popup click Properties.
General tab, double click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) to pull up TCP/IP Properties.
If the auto DNS is not selected, check it.
Click OK, click OK, then click close. Reboot the computer.

Redo ipconfig /all and check to see if the DNS Servers IP listed has changed to 192.168.1.1.


If that doesn't work, try manually specifying the DNS Server address(es).
Go back into the IPv4 Properties and check " Use the follwing DNS server addresses
Enter 192.168.1.1 for the primary address.
The secondary address, if used, would be the first DNS server listed on the router's status page.
Click OK, click OK click Close.
Reboot the computer.
