Unhappy Media Disconnected - cannot obtain new ip address
Hello, Im not sure if this is in right category, but i guess it will be seen regardless

Anyway, I have an hp desktop pc, running windows 7, with high speed cable connection.. Im attempting to obtain a new ip address.. but when I go to command prompt, and type in ipconfig/release, I get an error telling me that "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected"

Im not sure what this error means. Can anyone help?

The error means that with 'Media disconnected' you have no IP address to release.

I'm assuming that your real issue is an inability to get a connection. If that's a good assumption ...

What is the brand and model of your modem? What is the brand and model of your router, if you have a separate unit?

The inability to get a connection could be because you did not power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) the modem when switching the device connected to it, or a defective cable or a defective NIC.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.
