Wireless Connection Issues
I’m having major issues with my wireless connection at home. It was set up by a “Professional” and it’s worked like crap ever since. Most recently the connection will connect and then sometimes in a matter of a few seconds will disconnect and this repeats over and over. If I’m lucky, it stays connected for a few minutes, and then disconnects…..
I’m running Windows 7, with wireless thru Time Warner…….My computer is an HP Pavillion DV8 laptop…..The router is a Cisco Linksys (model WRT160N)

I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall --- to "reset"/disconnect the router and such and it says it's correctly configured, but when I disconnect it from the wall connection, it does not work.....

Please help!
Thanks…

Try to narrow down the problem. Connect your computer with an Ethernet cable directly to your modem. If you still have connection issues, it's either your service or your computer. Call your ISP and they can tell if it's a problem on their end. Or try another computer and see if the problem persists.

If it clears up with a wired connection, then it's something to do with the Wi-Fi. Do other devices have the same issues? If not, then it's something in your computer. If so, it's something with the wireless router. It could also be a problem with interference, or something blocking the radio signals from getting from the router to your computer. Try moving them to different locations.

Once you narrow down which device is actually the problem, it will be much easier to figure out what's going on.

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

I dont know if one thing has to do with another -- I attempted to print something and my printer says it cannot print because it is also "offline" -- I have a PS3 which I have connected to my wireless to view Netflix and online gaming which I have been able to still connect to......

I want to think it's something with the WiFi -- It worked a few mornings ago, I came home from work and it essentially hasn't worked since......the only way I can access the internet is if I connect my blue Ethernet cable directly from my router to my laptop......

Thoughts? Should I be barking at Time Warner (who I hate with a passion)....Do you have any recommendations regarding whether AT & T is any better?

OK, I understand you to be saying that an ethernet connection to the router is OK, but wireless is an issue for multiple devices. Let's see if we can learn more about the Wi-Fi ...

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool. Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I do not. But, in general I prefer cable over DSL. If it were available to me I'd probably try fiber optic. So, if you're talking about AT&T DSL I doubt that you would be any happier. With Time Warner you're getting 8 or 10 or 12 or more Mbps download, right?

Based on the networks shown in the Xirrus output try channel 4, 5, 6 and 9. If none of them work give satisfactory results see if you can show a screen shot with all the other networks visible.
