Solved: Toshiba Satellite Becomes Unresponsive
I have a Toshiba Satellite A665-S6050 and it works fine when wireless connection is off. When I connect to my home router, a Lynksys WRT54GS, it will connect fine and the internet will work. However, after about 5-20 mins, the laptop will become completeley unresponsive (screen frozen, mouse disappears, keyboard doesn't work, & won't go into sleep mode) and I need to reboot it by holding the power button down. This happens regardless of computer activity; it's happened without a web browser being open & without any programs actively running.

If I disable the wireless connection prior to the laptop becoming unresponsive, the computer will continue to work fine until I re-establish wireless connection. At this point, again it takes 5-20 mins for the laptop to become unresponsive.

i would look at the wireless driver on the Toshiba site and install
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...t/jsp/home.jsp
click on download and then select your exact model and download the driver

if its the latest then go into device manager and right click on the wireless network adapter , uninstall and then restart the PC and allow windows to detect new hardware and re-install

Checked on the Toshiba site and the drivers seem to be the latest.

With uninstalling, I just want to check before I do something stupid. In Device Manager, under Network adapters I have 4 drivers:

Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller

Which of these should I uninstall?

Ok, hopefully last question with this process. When uninstalling, it gives me the option to delete the driver software for it as well. Should I do that?

Thanks very much for the help and patience.

no - let it keep that and then use when it restarts if that does resolve we can try deleting the driver software and do it a 2nd time - little steps

Ok, uninstalled it and after restarting it reinstalled it automatically. However, now it isn't detecting any wireless signals.

lets see a device manager, xirrus screen shot and also the services running - all below

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Device Manager
Post back the results in device manager
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

how to access device manager for different windows versions
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm

windows key and pause Key should open to allow device manager to be seen,
on a laptop you may need to use windows key + FN key + Pause Key

if this does not work then

Windows 7 or Vista
Click on the Start Orb
In the Start Search box type
device manager and then press enter

-------------------

Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >
windows 7
start > control panel> System and Security> Device Manager

network adaptors, click on the + > post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X

post a screen shot of the device manager - network adapters

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here
Full details are here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_...g_a_Screenshot

Or if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in
Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://wpc.475a.edgecastcdn.net/0047...etup.1.2.0.exe

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi...uide1-2-0.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_...g_a_Screenshot

Or if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in
Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better.

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/ or
if you want to optimise base station position and signal strength / dead spots use
http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/ which has a graph function to monitor signal
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Services

We would like to see some status information for each of the services listed below to do this goto

Start> {Run in XP} {Search box in Vista/W7}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:
SERVICES.MSC
OR
Control Panel>
Administrative Tools>
Services>

then for each of the servies listed below - Please post back the following status information -
If the service is Started/Stopped
and
If the service is Automatic/Manual
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Windows 7 & Vista wireless configurations only)
  • Workstation

If a service is not running,
right click on the service
then click on properties and now check the dependencies.

Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running.

Fairly certain the physical switch is on. Posted a screenshot of the toggle for it via the function key.

I don't see anything popping up on the screen when it is being toggled, nor any lights going on/off.

I have not downloaded any drivers off the toshiba website.

uninstall again as before and see if anything changes - if not - download the toshiba driver from the website and install

I would expect something to happen when you toggle the wireless

is there an icon in the bottom right system tray ?

Uninstalled, restarted, and reinstalled. There doesn't appear to be any changes in the Device Manager, Xirrus, or Services.

Posting a screencap of the tray icon.

I did make a mistake earlier, now I see the light that goes off/on when the wireless is toggled off/on via the function key.
