Hi,

My laptop is connected to my router via wi-fi but I am unable to surf the net with any internet browser or use any web-based programs such as Steam, Garena etc. The other laptops in my home which are also using the same wi-fi are working fine. The error that Google Chrome gave was "Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED) Unable to resolve the server's DNS address". I have tried flushing the DNS cache and disabling the Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport. Those didn't avail at all.

Could someone please help. Thanks!

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

That unevenness in the Signal History could indicate a problem with the wireless driver or adapter. Make sure you have the latest driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site. If you already have the latest driver reinstall it anyhow in case the installed instance is corrupted.

Then take another look at Xirrus output. If necessary try running closer to the router, where you have a stronger signal.

Please disregard the previous screenshot, that one is of my working laptop. Here's the one from the problematic laptop. The adapter driver has already been updated but the problem still persists. I have the same problem with the ethernet. Windows update and gadgets are working perfectly fine with both wifi and ethernet.

That plus trouble with browsers could be caused by a firewall or security suite blocking, but more likely either a problem with stack/WINSOCK or the rare problem of DNS not working when the router is given as the DNS server.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If that doesn't work and it's not a firewall issue try on that PC a free public DNS server.

Tried all of your suggestions even Google's public DNS server. Nothing worked. Any other solutions?

One other possibility I just thought of is a proxy server, but you would have to have that specified in multiple places to impact all browsers. For Firefox; Tools - Options - Advanced tab - Network sub-tab - (Connection) Settings... - select 'No proxy'.

For IE and some other browsers: Control Panel - Internet Options - Connections tab - LAN Settings - none of the three options on that page should be selected.

I'm now out of ideas.

Could it be due to virus/ registry problem? I think something happened to my computer registry after I tried to delete the BasicScan malware with an anti-virus.
