My granddaughter moved into her dorm yesterday. She was able to connect to the Internet, wirelessly, at home and at my house without any problem. In her dorm, she cannot connect with the laptop. She can connect with her phone and her roommate can connect with her laptop, but my granddaughter's laptop will not. I would appreciate any suggestions for what we should look for.

This is the description of her laptop, if needed: Acer 17.3" AS7750-6423 Laptop PC: Key Features and Benefits: Intel Core i5-2430M processor 2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache 4GB DDR3 SDRAM system memory

have you contacted the school's IT department? Frequently those networks are password protected. What error are you getting?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Sorry for the delay, but we are working with a 4 hour distance and she is, of course, involved in first day at college activities. I relay your replies to her then have to wait until she can answer back.

She tells me that it says she is connected to Southeast Missouri State, but when she tries to get online, it says "Server not found."

I had her turn off her firewall, but still got the same "Server not found."

So to clarify, she opens her web browser and a Server not found page is displayed. I did some googling and found some of the school's pages which may be of help:

Sometimes a problem like this can be as simple as having accidently pressing the wireless button on the laptop itself, thus disabling internet. I have come across this problem a lot with customers.

Thanks so much for the help. She wound up calling the IT Help Desk and learned about 80 other students were having the same problem. They told her it was something in the University's software and not her laptop. They are working to get it fixed. Again...Thanks
