Solved: Keep losing internet connectivity
First I will explain my system info and the network map and then I will go on with my problem.

ISP : Shaw

PC >> SMC Modem/Router >> Netgear Router >> PS3 and Denon Stereo Receiver ( Both hardwired to Netgear Router), 2 Laptops and 2 Phones connected wirelessly

- The reason I do not use the SMC as a router is because I was getting terrible wireless signal.

- When everything is working properly I am getting great speeds

Problem : I keep losing internet connectivity. On the wireless devices I still have have great signal strength but no connectivity. I need to run netgear genie or ipconfig/release/renew to get it back. It always comes back but this is annoying.

It also does this on the PS3 and Denon which are hardwired to the router..as with the other ones if I reset the router or do a connection test on the PS3 it will fix it. Finds IP but no internet connectivity.

My PC has also started to lose connectivity and I need to do a ip release/renew and it comes back fine.

The fact that this is happeneing on my PC would lead me to believe that it may be an issue with the Modem/router. Are there some settings I need to change on it since I am only using it for modem purposes? I have disabled the wireless on it but I don't think that would be the issue anyways.

Some help would be greatly appreciated and if anymore info is needed just let me know. Thanks in advance.

can you connect to the SMC Modem/Router and see if that loses connection at all

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> type CMD to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Type the following command
Ping {then a space and then add the number that is shown against the item labelled "default gateway" shown in the results from the ipconfig /all}
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
Quote:
For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router.
The next two Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet. google is to test by name and the ping test using a number is checking that a connection exists without DNS.
these tests then confirm if there is a dns issue on the connection.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil.../download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus...-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
OR
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are available here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_...g_a_Screenshot

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/ or
if you want to optimise base station position and signal strength / dead spots use
http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/ which has a graph function to monitor signal

In post 3 the PC wasn't disconnected..it does it a lot less then any of the other components..I was simply showing the randomness of it. A couple of the components were disconnected at that time. I can post when it becomes disconnected whenever that may be.

For whats it worth the last time wireless went out on my laptop I troubleshoot it and got a DNS error. I get a DNS error on my PS3 sometimes also.

All I want is the PS3 and the DENON to be hardwired to the internet and work without issue so I can stream HD movies and use Airplay with the Denon. They don't necessarily have to run off the Netgear I suppose..all I wanted the Netgear for was to get better wireless signal which I do get when working.

yes please

you could in the meantime try google open dns to see if it helps and resolves the issue

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Google public DNS

Google public DNS
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/

Theres also a link on how to setup those DNS IP address up on a PC
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

How to set XP here
http://techie-buzz.com/how-to/google...and-winxp.html

Then once you have set up those DNS entries

Flush & register DNS

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):
In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands:

Ipconfig/flushdns
ipconfig/registerdns

If you receive the message
The requested operation requires elevation.
Then please open the command prompt as administrator
Start> All Programs> Accessories and then right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

now type the command again

Update :

My main PC hasn't disconnected for a few days now but all the other components that are connected to the Netgear Router keep disconnecting randomly. PS3 is always a DNS error and just now one of my laptops connected wirelessly gave me DNS error.

This is really frustrating to have these connections going in and out.

so the PC that you put the google open dns into now works and nolonger disconnects
if thats the case then we can put those settings into the router so all devices will then use the google open dns - rather than setup on each device

whats the exact model of the netgear router - you should be able to log into the router and goto a configuration page and enter the google open dns
if you post the exact model - i can find the online manual and advise on how to do that

user manual is here
http://www.downloads.netgear.com/fil..._31AUG2010.pdf

figure 1-6
the image only shows the DNS settings = if you set the DNS for google
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

that will apply to all devices connected to the router

Im trying to go change the settings right now. I know for a fact the router doesn`t allow me to log into it wirelessly so I plugged a cable straight from my laptop to the router and it wont detect the connection.

Haha..this is baffling..now I have a connection..that was a brain fart on my part but now I can`t log on to the Netgear..I have used 192.168.1.1 and routerlogin.net which are documented in the manual but it will not connect with either.

you seem to have
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
so that is the IP to use
192.168.0.1
NOT
192.168.1.1

192.168.0.1 is the SMC which is the modem/router..I need to get onto the Netgear router and the manual says that 192.168.1.1 is the IP to use..I've used that before to access it and now it wont work
