Solved: Dlink WBR 2310 no connection
I was assisting a friend by trying to set up a wireless password on their network, I have no clue why they didn't have one, and when it did the normal resetting machine protocol after the password setup we lost all internet, we can connect to the wireless network fine but it has no internet. The modem has internet connection as when I link via ethernet I can connect to the internet. DHCP is not enabled on the router, I'm not sure if I have to set that setting on the modem? or frankly how to do that either. I can post the ipconfig information and any extraneous information if needed here.

that would depend on if the modem is also acting as a router

some make and models of the router and the modem

set up a wireless password on their network,
What did you change to ? WPA / WPA2 / WEP - exactly what type of security used ?
the change of password did this effect all devices ?
please give details ?

lets see an ipconfig /all and ping tests
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> type CMD to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Type the following command
Ping {then a space and then add the number that is shown against the item labelled "default gateway" shown in the results from the ipconfig /all}
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router.
The next two Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet. google is to test by name and the ping test using a number is checking that a connection exists without DNS.
these tests then confirm if there is a dns issue on the connection.

I had the same problem. Turned out that I needed to download the WPA 2 update from microsoft.com because my new router used the newer WPA,WPA2 with PSK network security. Just download the hotfix and reboot at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-F7FC20195769

details to read first if you want to here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917021

hope it works for you!

Your router has DHCP enabled by default for LAN and WAN sides (server, client accordingly).
Make sure you've reset it properly. Call your ISP and find out whether you have static IP, or not. If you had static and then reset the router, you certainly loose internet connection.

The reason you needed the hotfix is because you did not have service pack 3. We usually do not help with XP problems unless SP3 has been applied or that there is a good reason why not. In this thread we do not even know if XP is involved.

I assume that you are trying to help, but if this is your only solution please try to find a matching problem.

Thanks for understanding, and I hope to see you helping in more threads.

When I am connected to the router I get internet access, but when only connected via wireless I get local only.
This is what it says when I do the tests via ethernet plugged into the router.

you have a modem and a router
1) can you post back the make and models of both please

the first IP shows a connection to a modem - so was the PC connected to the modem at that time or router
2) If router - then check how the connections are made and make sure the modem is connected to the Wan/internet/modem connection on the router
3) Do a power cycle each time you change a connection - but do one now anyway - see how below

you say all you did was to put a wireless security password on the router
4) Would you log back in and take off the wireless password and see if you can connect

------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router
  • Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
  • Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes,
  • Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
  • First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Next switch on the router (if a seperate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

Nothing new in this post; really just a shorter version of etaf's post.

If that successful ethernet connection was to the modem, did you remember to power cycle the modem when connecting the router to it?

If that successful ethernet connection was through the router then probably the router is connected to the modem by LAN port instead of the WAN port or the router is defective.
