Sony Vaio can not connect wirelessly to Netgear router
Hi there,

It's my first time on this forum so would be delighted if anyone could help me PLEASE! I have just bought a brand new Sony Vaio laptop VPCEH2. I have tried to connect wirelessly to my Netgear router (DG934G). The router and broadband is supplied by Sky. The laptop is running Windows 7. The router is sending a wireless sending fine to our desktop and two smartphones but the Vaio is unable to connect.

The Vaio finds the signal which is says is excellent but does not connect. Using an ethernet cable the internet connection is fine. I have been on the phone to Sky for nearly 2 hours across two nights and they have given up. We have tried setting up a new router password, disconnecting and reconnecting, establishing a connection in the Network and Sharing Cente using WPA security with no joy. I asked them if the router needed a firmware upgrade for Windows 7 and they were adamant that it did not - the firmware version is currently V2.02.44. I have checked the Windows 7 compatibility listings for Netgear routers but couldn't find the DG934G (or the DG834GT - which I believe is a newer version), listed.

The funny thing is that when Sky did help me to create a wireless connection in the sharing centre is did work for around 30 seconds where I was able to access around 5/6 webpages. The browser then stopped working and the connection was lost (with yellow warning triangle across the signal to bottom right of screen).

I see literally hundreds of people on the internet have had similar problems with the Sony Vaio and windows 7, all seemingly with very technical solutions which are over my head!

Another thing to note was that Sky originally blamed the fault on a McAfee update. I looked into this and deinstalled McAfee and even spoke to them for a while and they confirmed that it had deinstalled and did some other tests and said it was definitely not their software causing the problem.

If anyone could help me I would be hugely grateful!! Many thanks in advance

have you removed the mcafee completely
I would suggest that
we have a link to how where http://forums.techguy.org/networking...s-network.html

next this may not work (as wireless often does not work in this mode) , but its simple to do - so please try anyway
- try safemode with networking
as the PC starts keep tapping F8 - a menu appears - choose
safemode with networking - see if that works
------------------------------------------------------------------------

next can we see an ipconfig /all and an xirrus screen shot
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil.../download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus...-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
OR
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are available here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_...g_a_Screenshot

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/ or
if you want to optimise base station position and signal strength / dead spots use
http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/ which has a graph function to monitor signal

can we see the xirrus screen shot - make sure the wireless is actually working / detecting wireless signals

would you go into normal mode and post back the following
another ipconfig /all
and these three ping tests

it may be the services - so we need to see those - it maybe a conflict between the wireless manager programs
see below for the standard list of services , but it may also be an Atheros service - post back if any service is there with a name of atheros

I have also posted an event view - below - have a look and see whats in event viewer that may show the reason for the wireless not working

but lets see the ping tests
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> type CMD to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Type the following command
Ping 192.168.0.1
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
Quote:
For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router.
The next two Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet. google is to test by name and the ping test using a number is checking that a connection exists without DNS.
these tests then confirm if there is a dns issue on the connection.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Status of Services

We would like to see some status information for each of the services listed below.

To do this goto

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> type CMD to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Type the following command
SERVICES.MSC

OR
Control Panel>
Administrative Tools>
Services>

then for each of the services listed below - Please post back the following status information;
If the service is set to Started or Stopped
and
If the service is set to Automatic or Manual
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Windows 7 & Vista wireless configurations only)
  • Workstation

If any of those services are not started/running,
then right click on the service
then from the menu choose properties and now check the dependencies.

for each dependancy entry - Check each of one of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running/starting.

---------

Also to help us identify what may be causing the issue
Check the event log, there may be clues to what is failing. To do that
Start >
control panel >
administrative tools >
event Viewer>

------------------------------------------------------------------------

so that looks good - xirrus
not the ping tests

next would be to remove the wireless security off the router and see if you can connect with no security - if you can , then put the security back on and see if it works -
if not - then we may need to update the driver

as its UK time zone I'm in , i will be logging off soon, if you post all the results- others (US) may reply
otherwise tomorrow

so another thing to try is a tcp/ip reset

------------------------------------------------------------------------

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista/Windows 7

Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on the screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold and red for the following commands.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog and press enter

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log and press enter

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log and press enter

ReStart (reboot) the machine.

If you receive the message
The requested operation requires elevation.
Then please open the command prompt as administrator - as requested above
Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Please note and post back - if you receive the following message :-
Access is Denied

please post back the results in a reply here - its important we know that these commands have worked correctly and not produced any errors
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Details also here

whats the exact model of that Vaio
VPCEH2
comes up with a lot of different models
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/search/vpceh2

wanted to find the atheros driver before logging off

also try safemode - wireless does not always work in this mode , so may not prove anythign - unless it works ok
- try safemode with networking
as the PC starts keep tapping F8 - a menu appears - choose
safemode with networking - see if that works

heres the driver
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/pro...000255410_5899

so - you could try updating the driver

and then try going into device manager and network adapter [+] then right click on the atheros adapter and uninstall/remove
restart the PC and allow windows to detect new hardware and install the driver

so a few things to do

mcafee - have you removed with removal tools

safemode - did you try and what happened

services - list of all the services status

atheros service - do you have one - if so , then we need to only have atheros or the wlan service running - more tomorrow

tcp/ip reset - did that work with no errors

remove adapter from device manager - did that help ?

Hi Etaf,

To answer your questions see my points in green:

mcafee - have you removed with removal tools - yes completed workaround 2 after using uninstall program in control panel. Is there anyway to make sure that it 100% gone, I'm just not convinced.

safemode - did you try and what happened - connected to 4/5 webpages before losing connection.

services - list of all the services status
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues) STARTED, AUTOMATIC
  • Computer Browser EMPTY STATUS (IE NOT STARTED), MANUAL - this service depends on server and workstation
  • DHCP Client STARTED AUTOMATIC
  • DNS Client STARTED AUTOMATIC
  • Network Connections STARTED MANUAL
  • Network Location Awareness STARTED AUTOMATIC
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) STARTED AUTOMATIC
  • Server STARTED AUTOMATIC
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper STARTED AUTOMATIC
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Windows 7 & Vista wireless configurations only) STARTED AUTOMATIC
  • Workstation STARTED AUTOMATIC

atheros service - do you have one - if so , then we need to only have atheros or the wlan service running - more tomorrow both atheros Svc and Atheros Bt&Wlan Coex Agent - started and automatic

tcp/ip reset - did that work with no errors - yes:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>netsh winsock reset catalog
Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset.

C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reseting Global, OK!
Reseting Interface, OK!
Reseting Unicast Address, OK!
Reseting Route, OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.

C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reseting Interface, OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.

C:\Windows\system32>

remove adapter from device manager - did that help ? - am I really ok to remove the adaptor?

Had just recently an issue with the Atheros Configuration Service conflicting with the windows wireless manager

so all we needed to so was stop the Atheros Configuration Service and set to manual in the services box
and that resolved the issue

would you try that

if that does not work
the Atheros Bt&Wlan Coex Agent is a service for wireless and bluetooth - so we should set to manual and stop that and see if that solves the issue

Quote:
am I really ok to remove the adaptor?
Yes, windows will detect on a restart - we do this 100s of times on the forum to resolve these types of issue - but as with everything not 100% guaranteed if theres another issue on the PC, or if theres a hardware fault on the adapter - but has never failed yet, and if it did , than that would be the issue anyway
