network slows down every afternoon
every computer in our library public network slows down every day, usually in the afternoon. This has been going on for ages. Our IT person's solution is to reset the connection every day, and getting him to do it is a hassle.

any ideas as to figuring out why it happens on a regular basis?

Ahhhh the infamous IT dude How's it going Mraaron?

Well there are many factors that can cause the slowdown. From people streaming / downloading to the type of network implentation. Do you know what type of network it is? As in is it 10Mbps Ethernet? 100Mbps? etc.

it's 10mbps connection.

even if there are two people using the internet, it slows down.

oh i forgot to ask, did you mean the internet is slow or the network itself?

i stand corrected, the connection is actually 100 mbps which is normalfor our LAN.

To answer your other question, BOTH the network and internet come to a stop. For example, we are using the virtual networking application Hamachi, and during this 3-5pm time period, it can't even log in to the network. However, other computers we have here that are on that virtual network but connect directly to the internet, can log in, so we are pretty sure it isn't an issue with Hamachi.

However, all our computers are connected to a central server (which in itself is a disaster), but our public stations connect to the internet using one service provider where as our staff stations connect to the internet using the regional library network. So, what ends up happening is that our staff computers can still operate normally during this 3-5 time (shown by our ability to use hamachi), but our public computers just cannot access the internet, but things can still work over the network, but just slowly, such as printing.

So thats the state of the union, if anyone can at least shed some light for us so we can further tackle this digital disaster, thank you very much

well if it was the internet only, then the ISP would be the issue, but if it's the network itself for the public computers... something between the ISP and the computers will be the culprit. Do you know what type of ISP and speed you have for the pubic computers?

we have Comcast and we don't know how fast it is. It's a broadband connection, if that helps.

you will need either a NAT Translation list of that timeframe or a SNMP packet sniffer to see what data is going across your network. I might also suggest to shut down all computers in the Library that are utilized for public use at that time.

Then, I would suggest to use a bandwidth test to see if you are getting the full bandwidth from your provider at that time. www.speakeasy.com has a nice bandwidth testing interface and software. Select the city closest to you to get the best results.

The fact that it happens specifically between 3 and 5 pm means that there is an automatic program running somewhere or there is EMI (rare but it happens) bleeding into the wires causing signal disruption somewhere.

It also sounds like you need to fire that IT person and get someone better.

That might explain a little bit Mraaron. With a cable connection, the speed of the connection may be lower at peak times. Since the internet network (the network ID the IP Address is associated to) is 'shared' with other people, it can slow down if a lot of people are connected at the same time. since it's in the 3-5PM range... it's probably kids going online after school and playing some online game like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy.

It's common. I guess there is a lot of users at that time.

I have already suggested that in another thread where the so-called 'IT person' wouldn't do a simple thing.

If the internet connection is the problem, then Id suggest dumping them ASAP and looking into a better solution. You are probly not paying much for it. Cable/Telco companies like to play the political field with internet access and give Public sites a discount so they have a "foot in the door" on policies and what not.

ummm... comcast? That's cable, as in one step down to T1... and since it's a business it would be expensive, but anything less would not be feasible for a company, anything more would be too expensive. And judging by the IT persons frame of mind, I doubt he wants to get anything more expensive. T1 would probably be best, but it's what the business needs as appose to what is the best thing to keep it from being slowed down.

It's more common issue and the most likely. If the problem was 24/7 then it would be something else.
