computer dialing phone, why?
I changed from dialup to cable ISP. I have no other cable service. When i made this change, my computer also started dialing a comcast #. I have no idea why. I only noticed, because I pay for each out going call on my verizon phone service. My bills starting with my June bill list over 100 calls each month to 374 4156, which is comcast.

My cable ISP Bright house (time warner) denies that they are doing this. Comcast also denies it. Before I push further, I want to look in my system and sew what / how this is occurring. Can I do this?

Thanks,
paul

My guess would be that when you installed the Comcast software it also setup the dialup incase the cable service was ever out. Easiest way to fix this is just disable the modem in hardware manager, then nothing is dialing out.

That's not accurate. Comcast does not have dial-up service. If the cable internet goes out, your out of luck until itcomes back on.

My first concern is that you have the PC dial-up modem connected to the phone line if it's not needed.

With the proliferation of dialler trojans and the higher probability of power surges between networks taking the PC out (despite surge diverters), unless its essential for PC fax or similar, I would never consider having a broadband connected PC also connected to the dial-up phone line via a modem.

I am assuming your dial up was comcast right? When you changed did you make sure to remove the dial up networking setup for comcast? Also if you use I.E. did you go into the connectiondid you go into your I.E. internet options to the connection settings and make sure the dial up was not in there?

This is where it gets strange even with BOTH of those places I mentioned to look you should have seen some kind of pop-up dialog box and then heard the modem dialing. You mean to say you haven't heard your std modem dialing out to give any indications you were calling out?

BTW not to start a fight but I leave my PC connected both ways but the PC doesn't use its fax out but once in a blue moon. I have a scanner attached to the PC and sometimes I use my PC to fax out (maybe once every 6 months) but I still keep it connected.

I'll say it again: Comcast does not offer dial-up service!!

Okay barring the fact I only read the firstp ost and not the third did you check the settings in your dial up networking connections and in internet explorer?

Basically i am saying if you have old dial up networking information in your PC you should try removing this stuff first to see if this resolves the dialing this other number issue.

I don't know where in his first post you got the idea that Comcast has dial-up service.

When i made this change, my computer also started dialing a comcast #.
This to me makes me think that in some way there WAS a comcast dial up connection in there. The fact he correlated it with the change made me think they may have offered it.

ANYWAY, if you haven't gotten this problem solved, go to internet options (Control panel or just right click on the IE icon and go to properties).
Go to Connections. If you see ANYTHING in that box in the middle, check the box that says "Never dial a connection". That should stop any dial-up protocols.

This is a strange problem. Be sure your virus scanner is updated and run a virus scan. I'd consider running Adaware and Spybot as well, just to be safe. Your computer shouldn't do that. I use Comcast HSI and it's never tried anything like that--although since switching to high speed I don't connect a phone line to the modem. If you don't need to have that connected for a fax or alternate dial up service, go ahead and disconnect it.

sorry for the delay. After my last post I got no further notices that addition posts were made, so I did not revisit this forum.

My previous dial up was earthlink. It is still in IE connections, but it is set to never dial a connection and this did not happen when I was using this service. My cable is there as "broadband connection" and it to is set to never dial a connection.

At this point, I do not want to delete it. I do not want to make any changes until I find the culprit!

I never heard my modem calling and I never experienced a busy line while picking up my phone. This is strange.

norton 2005 anti virus, spybot, lavasoft ad-aware, spyware blaster, and zone alarm firewall apps are up to date and do not find anything.

I just called the number and it is a local residence, not comcast. Now i am really lost. And the residence said that they never received the other calls that are listed on my phone bill.

I did such and several days later I faxed something successfully. Then I looked in hardware mgr and I see it is enabled...all by itself. Ideas? I figure either re-boot, or ms word using the fax reset it.

Also, I did call back verizon and asked about the # being a residence several days ago. They were going to get back to me, but did say that they wanted to look at another(next) month's phone activites...

norton is gone forever. I now use AVG AV. Modem is disabled and now stays disabled after warm and cold boots.

Now all I need to do is figure how how and why and what is trying to call out from my pc. I really want to know, cuz they need to reimburse me.
