I am trying to network Laptop (Toshiba Satellite with inbuilt wireless adapter, ethernet LAN) To My Desktop machine (inbuilt Ethernet) and USB Wireless. Wireless connection says connected on both machines but I can neither can see shares across the network nor brows or connect to the internet from the laptop.

My physical network is laid out as follows Desktop > cat five (crossover cable)>laptop and USB wireless on desktop to inbuilt wireless (Atheros AR5005G) on the laptop.

I would be real grateful if any one can sugest how I can get these machines talking. If you think you could help I would be happy to furnish you with more detailed specs of my machines.

Deskto status icons report as follows:-
Ethernet LAN reports:- status=Connected ,Speed=100mb
Wireless Network reports Status=Connected, Speed =-54mb, connection =Peer to peer
There is also another icon for WLAN which reports = Connect to terry and when right clicked gives you the 'Wireless Configeration Utility HW.32' Property sheet with the following tabs and details:-

You don't mention either PC being connected to an ISP via cable, dial-up, DSL, etc., so that may explain the lack of internet access.

I suggest you try getting only one connection (ethernet or wireless) working at a time. After you get each working, then I guess you can use both at once--and I'd sure be interested in learning why.

Your title mentions pinging both ways. Is that with ethernet or wireless? By IP address only or also by computer name?

I have usb DSL (speed touch) modem on the desktop and internet on the destop works fine, I have also tried the modem on the laptop and internet works fine then my problem is getting inernet access for my laptop Via the desktop (where dsl modem usually lives).
I also had the same problems when I put a Eidemax switch betwen the two computers (with patch cables !) ie no internet sharing or ability to brows workgroup

Ping was by IP on both wirless and ethernet

Since you haven't mentioned enabling ICS or file and printer sharing, I'll post the following (just one way of doing so, and depends on having XP).

Run the Network Setup wizard (found in Control Panel of XP). Tell it desktop shares its internet connection and the laptop gets internet over the LAN and that you want to enable file and printer sharing. Create a disk at the end only if you have a Windows PC other than XP or 2k Pro.

Windows XP firewall (if SP2) will be properly configured by the wizard. You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine. Unique computer names and same workgroup, of course.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders (or drives) or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, accept the offer to load other drivers if your other PCs have different Operating System(s).

When you first go into My Network Places there will be nothing there. The first time you click on 'View Workgroup computers' will probably result in great disappointment. It takes awhile (20 minutes or so) before all the computers in the workgroup get up-to-date and accurate lists of the other computers. Often you can speed up this process via Search for other computers.

When computers show up in My Network Places, double click on one to see its shares. If that includes a printer, you can right click on the printer to connect to it.

OK I removed crossover cable and disabled ethernet connection (so as to be obnly using wireless connection. Ran Nework setup wizared (using wireless addapter) Now I have no connection at all ! "wireless connection unavailable"

How about posting an ipconfig /all for each PC?

Start - Run - cmd (Command in Windows 98SE) - OK

In the Command window type
ipconfig /all

Right click in the window and select 'select all' and hit the Enter key. You can then post the contents directly to a post here or into a Notepad file for a later copy.

On the desktop your wireless is disabled or unconnected.

You don't need ipv6 (unless you are experimenting with it) and it often causes problems. To get rid of it open a Command window and type
ipv6 uninstall

IPV6 has gone ,Wirless connection is NOT disabled, I just ran diagnostic and got the following output:-

I get The same Winsock error whenrunning the diagnostic on laptop

I'm not familiar with that diagnostic, but if you are using a browser on one of those PCs to post here the winsock can't be in too bad a shape.

On both those ipconfig /all I see:

"Ethernet adapter working-Wireless Network Connection:

and no other indication of wireless???

the network diagnostic tool I used was offered up by the OS (using IE 7) which is offerd up when the browser cannot display a website.
