IP Address Conflict
Hi, just found this site buy accident whlst searching the internet to help solve my problem. This site looks great (like having your own personal IT Department in your home!!).

The problem is this:

For some months I have been receiving a warning message bubble saying there is a conflict with IP address 192.XX.XX etc. The IP adress is that for my Ethernet adapter - if that helps). The Windows XP error log shows this message relates to 2 hardware addresses. These are 00:11:2F:69:81:7A and 00:C0:CA:30:4D:23.

It does not seem to interfere with the operating performance (I click the bubble and it goes away) but having lost all my data a few years ago when my hard disk crashed, I do not want to continue to ignore this anymore.

Some background info:
PC Model - Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook Tablet PC
OS - Windows XP Professional
ADSL connection to the internet via a ZyXel modem (in Kazakhstan!!)
Using MS Outlook linked to my AOL Acount for e-mail

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks

The first hardware address indicates something made by Asus (probably your laptop motherboard). The second is hardware made by Alfa, Inc. Do you have anything made by Alfa (access point, router, print server, VOIP, IP camera, etc)?

Edit: Also, what is the whole 192.168.x.x address? (It's safe, nobody can hack it).

Thanks Frank4d for the quick resposne.

I do not recognise the "Alfa" brand. I have not fitted anything to my laptop. The peripherals are a HP 1510 Printer Scanner copier, a Fujitsu Siemens Loox Pocket PC and the ZyXel modem for the ADSL connection recoemmended by the local Kazakh telecomm's company.

Not sure that helps?

Is the Zyxel modem wireless or are you wired to it?

You have another device with the same IP address assigned on your network. If it's none of your computers, my guess is you have a freeloader on the wireless connection. Time to encrypt that wireless channel.

Are you sure the wireless is disabled on the router?

The wireless option on the laptop is turned off and I just checked there are no wireless networks in range.

You say the, "The wireless option on the laptop is turned off, and I just checked there are no wireless networks in range."

This still doesn't answer JohnWill's question, "Are you sure the wireless is disabled on the router?"

Just because you turned off the "laptops wireless option "on the laptop doesn't not mean the wireless part of the router is turned off or disabled.

If you don't turn off the Routers wireless capabilities or at least secure it with WPA then someone else may be using your wireless router to connect to the internet, hench causing a conflict with IP address.

Also you say, "there are no wireless networks in range." You would get this if you have the Laptops wireless adapter disabled, because it is not able to detect if there is any Networks in range.

The intruders would obviously be connecting through the router, not the laptop.

OMG.......

Are there antennas coming from the router? You know, that little box you plug all the computers into.

What is the model number of your ZyXel modem?

It maybe a modem with a built in wireless router. If so it should have a antenna on it.

If not you should have a seperate little box with a antenna plugged into the modem by a cable of some sort, located between the modem and your computer. That would be the router.

If you have no modem with a built-in router, or no router (seperate little box with a antenna plugged into the modem by a cable of some sort) then you maybe logging into someones elses wireless router that lives around you, as in a neighbors or business etc., and that could cause your problem.
