Cannot ipconfig /renew
I am currently underway of removing a ton of viruses from my parents' computer and after running AVG and removing several problems their computer is no longer able to connect to the internet.

Everytime I try to use the network icon to repair the connection it immediately says that the process failed at renewing the IP address. The IP address is 169.xxx.x.x but the gateway and subnet are all 0's.

When I try command > ipconfig /renew I get: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

Help is appreciated to get the internet working again so I can do some scans for viruses that the guys in the security forum gave me. Oh, their computer is/has always been connected by a hardwire to an onboard nic card. I know the network is working because I am connected wireless right now.

Typically that is due to corrupted winsock registry entries.

Not sure what operating system you have. But I have clean entries for various operating systems at:

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/ie_tips.htm#winsock_fix

Delete the current one
Add a new clean one for your OS
Reboot

You can repair Winsock and TCP with this util.
http://www.computerconscript.com/winsockfix.exe

It can be fit on a floppy or USB drive so you can transfer onto the corrupt PC.

This is not a fix for XP-SP2, the registry entries for the TCP/IP stack have changed significantly, and this utility will corrupt your installation. XP-SP2 has the capability to repair the stack built-in.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
