Depends on your operating system. In NT and Win 2000 you can go to Start > Run > and type command and click ok to get to the command prompt. There you can type 'ping yahoo.com' or other names. Used mostly to see if the operating system can find the domain name. Tells you if you have an operating system problem or browser problem if you can't get to a certain site and other information. All depends on why you are trying to use it.

The ping command can be accessed from a MSDOS command prompt window. The ping command is used for trouble shooting NIC's or routers. The loopback IP for pinging your own machine is 127.0.0.1.
