Not sure if this forum or Networking forum is the correct place for this so moderator please feel free to move as you see fit.

I cannot map network drives when I am connected to my work VPN. It keeps telling me that the server responded "the name is unknown". It says to check spelling, settings,blah, blah blah. Nothing at work has changed, the only difference is Vista on my end.

Is there some issue between my Vista desktop and our windows 2000 server? Am I missing something?

I sent all the info to our "IT Guy", but he has no idea whats going on.

Any ideas?

I have done several OS upgrades and have never had any problems re-establishing my VPN connections and Mapping all my network drives where my info is located.

Not sure how you have the VPN Client configured. Here are the basics:

To confirm, you do connect to your Work VPN. It's just that when you try and map drives that you get the error? Can you give some details regarding what is being done when you get the error.

Yes I can connect to the VPN.

For mapping network drive I explore my computer, right click and select "map network drive", I select the drive, then select the exact folder and click finish. It looks for awhile then comes back with the message that "the name is unknown". I have double checked the folder names and even tried other folders.

Now I am writing this from memory as I haven't had time to get on the home computer lately. I am fairly sure this is the procedure I used.

What drive are you selecting to map to. Usually it is another computer's shared resource.

Do you see the VPN server when your browse?

If not can you map a drive manually with the net use command.

I am trying to map to a shared folder on our server.

Tonight when I get home I will check and see if I can see the vpn server when I browse. I don't know anything about net use command so you may need to help me with that.

Browsing with VPN can sometimes be difficult. Give it a try and post back.

Hello again Bob. I know its been awhile since I posted this problem but I just havent had time to deal with it.

Can you walk me thru your last two posts....about seeing the vpn when I browse and using net command?

Do you know the LAN IP address and the name of the computer you want to connect to?

I only know the file path.

Since browsing with VPN can be difficult if not impossible, you will likely need the LAN IP address and name of the computer you want to connect to.
