Network Nightmare
Hi everyone,

I've just found this site and I hope someone may be able to help me out.

I have just installed a Siemens Gigaset SE 587 WLAN dsl wireless router and this works perfectly for my PC an Advent T9202 (minus its wireless network card which I have put into an older HP Pavillion 492.uk) and also for my sons Mac notebook (although I cannot connect to Google images and Google news pages using the Mac but everything else seems to work perfectly).

But I cannot connect to the internet with the HP which is using a Realtek RTL 8139PCi Fast Ethernet card. I have tried to download a driver for the card but this still does not work.
I am based in the UK and my Broadband provider is Tiscali.

If there is a genius out there who can help me I would be very grateful.

Best Wishes

Does the HP work with any connection to a network?

What version and patch level of Windows?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

I'd also like to see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Well, the issue is that you didn't load your hardware drivers. It appears you're missing the chipset drivers as well as the network drivers, not to mention the sound drivers.

Go to the HP site in the support section and download all the drivers that are applicable to your machine. Try installing those and see if we make any progress.

Hi John,

Sorry I did not reply last night it was 2.30 am by the time I finished my previous post and I just had to sleep.

Well I tried to load the previous modem to the HP but I still cannot access the internet via this computer I will try to reinstall this modem and see if I can load any updates as suggested.

Hi John,

Well I managed to get online with the HP by installing the old modem and I updated the drivers from the HP site as recommended. I could not update any network drivers though.

I then connected the wireless Realtek card but this is not being recognised as it does not have any drivers loaded.

I removed the modem and uninstalled the software for it. I then ran the device manager as per your previous instructions which gave the following results

Network Adapters
1394 Net Adapter (Green)

Other Devices
? HP Deskjet 5550 (Yellow)
?! Network Controller (Yellow)

For some reason it is no longer recognising this Wireless Realtek card.

Isn't this your first mention of a wireless card for this HP? Is that maybe the "?! Network Controller (Yellow)"? Do you have the driver for it?

What happened to your ethernet card?

Hi Terry,

No I mentioned in my first post that I had taken the Wireless card out of the Advent to put it into the HP.
If you look at the previous posts it was recognised by the Device Manager. I ran the same commands as John instructed me to do last night with the Device Manager but it is now not recognising the Wireless card. I don't have any driver for this wireless card as it was prebuilt into my Advent PC.

Please excuse my ignorance but isn't a wireless card the same thing as an Ethernet card?
I tried downloading a driver from Realtek for this card but I don't know where to load the driver to and I can't understand why the Device Manager is not recognising the Realtek card now.

Best Wishes

OK, you did mention a wireless card. I didn't realize that it was for this HP. Sorry. But I still don't see where it shows in Device Manager.

So, what is the brand and model of the wireless card? If it is still supported you should be able to find a driver on the manufacturer's web site. If it is not supported you may still be able to find a driver on the web somewhere.

"Please excuse my ignorance but isn't a wireless card the same thing as an Ethernet card?"

Not exactly. An ethernet card will have a jack for connecting an ethernet cable. A wireless card includes a radio and has an antenna for broadcasting and receiving Wi-Fi signals.

What appears at this point in Device Manager? Have you resolved all the error indications?

Let's see another IPCONFIG /ALL

Hi Guys,

Well good news I guess, its kind of all working now.

I removed the Realtek card from the HP and plugged a crossover cable into the RJ45 socket and ran this to the router. The HP can now connect to the internet and My Shared Files on my Advent PC. (This should keep the children happy as they can now do their homework etc)

My eldest sons Mac can connect to the internet via the wireless setup. (This should keep him happy)

My Advent can still connect to the internet via the router. (Now if everything keeps working and none of the above mentioned children don't break or destroy this system it will definitely keep me happy)

So I guess its time to give you guys a great big pat on the back and I can now go and pick up my guitar.

I somehow don't feel as though this will be the last time that I visit this site as I call my eldest son Digital. Oh well the sites now in my favourites (just in case).

@ John, Many thanks for those little commands you gave me
@Terry, I hope my post didn't confuse you too much, I'm not to good with these little electrical boxes, I much prefer the old wooden ones with just the six wires.

Once again a huge thankyou.

Best Wishes
