Angry My roommate is sucking up all the bandwidth! Can I limi his bandwidth someway?
Hello,

My roommate is constantly downloading movies and whatnot from those torrent sites. He uses up all the bandwidth and the rest of our connections are really really slow. Whenever his computer is off or not downloading, our internet runs perfectly and smooth, but as soon as he starts it up again the rest of our connections slow down to a crawl.

I've tried asking him to stop downloading so much at once, but he just yells at us and won't stop. Is there someway for me to go into my router settings webpage and limit his bandwidth allocation or something? Just basically anything that will stop him from hogging all the internet.

I have a Linksys Wireless Router, model no. WRK54G. I would GREATLY appreciate any help you might have. Thank you very much!

Do you know A LOT more about computers than your roommate knows about computers?

Do you refer to the WRT54G?

If so:
Setup up the Linksys with a password that includes capital letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols such as !@#.

Go to

In chapter 3, Advanced Routing, page 14. Access Restrictons

"Decide which days and what times you want this policy
to be enforced. Select the individual days during which
the policy will be in effect, or select Everyday. Then
enter a range of hours and minutes during which the
policy will be in effect, or select 24 Hours."

If your roommate can physically access the router, your roommate can re-set the router & configure it herself / himself.

None of the above will stop the SHOUTING!

You probably want to configure the QoS on the router to balance the load.

You will find QoS load balancing, also in the user guide, Chapter 3.

download speeds do not matter if you have a decent connection. the only way him downloading would be effecting your speeds, is if you are on dial-up.

what slows down your connection, is his uploading... just tell him to turn off the uploads...
