ADSL - Intermittent connection - Line is ok though
I recently put in a Linksys Wireless G ADSL Home Gateway router (WAG200G) for a customer.

It was working ok for a couple of weeks, then started to play up a bit - The connection is intermittent (it's working at the moment).

However, if the Internet light goes out, the customer can plug his old DSL modem back in to the phone socket and that will work fine (just the other household members can't get on the net when he's using the modem).

We've spent ages on the phone to TalkTalk and they've done a line test, which was ok. The phone works ok on the same line. He has filters installed on all of his phone points.

I also tried another Linksys router and that made no difference. That was still intermittent.

Any ideas?????

do you have a monitored home alarm system? If so, they report back to the monitoring system every so often and if you don't have a specific alarm filter, it will bump you off

Any wireless interference, especially from another wireless network or 2.4 Ghz cordless phone? Have different channels been tried?

This is great idea actually. Also, can be interfence from the water heater.

I have seen sync issues with a million different things and the home alarm is big reason for dropped DSL.

Thanks for those suggestions, I've just emailed the customer to see if he has an alarm system.

Wireless is ok.

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Have the latest firmware upgrade in the router?

Ok, I'll try a firmware upgrade when I get a chance.

Someone mentioned to me that the chipset in the router is incompatible with something or other (can't remember what they said now). Could this be the case?

Chipset in the router incompatible? Not very likely, that's not the first thing I'd be looking at.

I replaced his router with a ZyXEL and he hasn't reported any problems in the 3 weeks or so since it's been installed. I've been testing the Linksys router at home for 2 weeks now and again no problems. So really don't know what the cause of his problem was, not that it really matters now, unless someone else gets the problem.
