Probably because they didn't have a decent wireless solution at the time.

They still don't IMHO.

That's why I bought another wi-fi card - despite having the letest drivers, the transfer rate with the Intel built-in wi-fi was laughable, like, 40mins to copy a 700mb file.

S'pose if anyone could help me with the Intel wi-fi then I could throw my hunk o' junk replacement wi-fi PCMCIA card in the bin, having tried all the helpful suggestions on this thread, apart from sending it back, for which I think now the time has come.

Thanks for all your help guys/gals. Anyone know what might be up with my builtin Intel? I get full singal and everything, and web browsing is fine. What's painfully slow is the transfer of files either from or to my laptop from any of the other PCs on my network.

This is an Intel adapter, right? What model?

Do you have the latest driver from your PC manufacturer's web site?

Using Windows XP's WZC or the Intel Proset utility to manage it?

What kind of results do you get via ethernet and via wireless with a speed test such as http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ?

Yes, it's an Intel 2200BG adapter.

I have the latest drivers from both the intel site and the Acer (my laptop) site, having uninstalled fully between installs.

I have tried using both XP's WZC and Intel's Proset Utility, with results very marginally better with the intel software.

I'm not at home at the mo, won't be until tuesday either. I'll report back then with the speed test results.

thanks

Be sure to use the latest driver from Acer's web site. Based on personal experience and other threads that adapter is very temperamental when it doesn't have precisely the right driver. Based on opinion and some other threads it works better with Intel's Proset utility.

If the driver is correct, the next thing to look for is wireless interference. An easy thing to do is try different channels, such as 1, 6 and 11.
