FWIW, I had to install the printer drivers on the Vista machine directly as if the printer was local, then add a new local port that pointed to the full network path of the shared printer on two of my Vista machines here. That may be something to try.

The real problem here is failure to ping, that's almost always a firewall configuration issue, and you really should try to track that down.

Try booting each machine in Safe Mode with Networking and see if that makes a difference in the pings.

The IPCONFIG stuff looks fine.

The ethernet connected XP has Gateway=Dhcp server=DNS=192.168.1.1.

The USB connected Vista has Gateway=Dhcp server=DNS=192.168.1.2.

I don't see how that strangeness would block pings, but maybe it is an indication that the router is really, really confused and could be causing problems that we don't normally attribute to routers.

Suggest that you ask your ISP for a replacement modem/router, or get your own, or try a small ethernet switch and don't use the USB.

Hello Both.
John, I have tried pinging in Safe Mode on both computers. The IP Address ping works on both but again, they won't ping by name. I then downloaded an updated printer driver for the Vista to no avail. I even tried plugging the printer to the vista but it would not use the updated driver. If I can't succeed in Networking, I suppose I can at least keep changing the printer over after doing a full printer install from the Epson disc.

Terry, before considering changing the router, I have already tried to find a small ethernet switch but I could do with one that doesn't need its own separate power point if that's possible as I already have so many plugs connected through an extension block to the wall socket. Do you know of one?

The ping by name is the issue here.

There are no Ethernet switches with no power supply, since they're active devices. You'll have to make arrangements to power it.



On the Vista machine, please do this.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.




On the XP machine, do this.

Right John. Did that on the XP - no problem. Did that on the Vista and after typing each request, messages came up as follows:- Resetting Echo request failed, Resetting Global failed, Resetting interface failed. All three were followed by "The operation requires elevating" and finally "No user specified settings to be reset".

Yes, you are quite right Terry. Thanks for that.I thought that as my settings were already set to use as administrator, I didn't need to do that. So I've done it again and all the results showed succesfull. However I still cannot ping the computers by name, only by IP address.

Terry, the messages on the Vista always say "Ping request could not find host BRIANXP. Please check the name and try again". BRIANXP is my XP computer name. On the XP comes BRIANVISTA which is the Vista name.

OK so what do I do next? How can I set or alter Zonealarm? I have already set it to receive the Vista IP address.

First off, disable it totally and see if it works then. That way we'll be sure we're looking in the right place.
