Laptop connects to internet but not NAS
Ok, setup is as follows: Dell desktop wired into O2 router/gateway (O2 service provider - Thompson Speedtouch I think is the make) also wired in are two buffalo linkstation drives a 250gb and 500gb.

I've recently bought a new laptop specifically for surfing, watching films and listening to music thats stored on my network.

Whilst the laptop connects straight away to the internet and it can see both Buffalo drives, it can't open any folders or even view the web interface controlling either drive.

This is driving me potty as I can see at least one of them on my Archos, access and play files from it and also no issues connecting with a Linktheatre network player.

Just can't understand why some devies are ok but my new laptop isn't even when I've switched off all the laptops security!!

Anyone any ideas?

Vista has a little problem seeing those Samba servers on the NAS devices sometimes. Start searching there.

Can you post an ipconfig /all for the laptop and then post the IP Address of the NAS?
Can you ping the NAS?

Disable IPv6 and use IPv4.
The gateway address looks awfully strange. I would expect that to be 192.168.1.1

NAS are on 192.168.1.104 and 106 What does that mean? The NAS should have its own IP address. You have more than one?

You should make SURE you have the latest firmware installed on the NAS units, I have several here that required firmware upgrades to run with Vista, and one still won't work properly with Vista.

Thanks for the quick responses.

jmwills - Yes I have two, one on 104 and the other on 106, both assigned by the DHCP on my router I imagine. I tried to switch off the IPv6 on my laptop and it didn't seem to have much effect, although it was just a quick go. I'll try again with a full restart and see how it goes. For my info, whats the difference between v4 and v6??

JohnWill - I'll try the firmware upgrades but have heard lots about lost boxes when trying to upgrade!!

I'll let you know how I get on..

IPv4 and IPv6 are different addressing schemes, IPv6 is the future of the Internet, but it causes more issues than it solves in local networks right now.

Ok,
There is an upgrade to the firmware on the Linkstation Pro, but I've just realised (silly I know!!) I can access both drives from my wired in Vista desktop, its just the wireless laptop version thats having problems.

I've seen some suggestion on the Buffalo site to look at secpol.msc but my laptop doesn't want to run it "Windows cannot find secpol.msc.....".

Still find it strange that I can see the drives on the laptop, see how full they are and capacity, map to them and even go down a level or two occasionally but not see any files or access the webinterface.

Be very careful with firmware upgrades. If you have the NAS set for any RAID configuration, the upgrade could wipe the drives then apply the upgrade and you will have to reconfigure the array. This is what happened when I was unable to acces the two I have, but they are the Intel SS4000-E. Firmware upgrade was needed to work with 500GB HDD in RAID 5.
If wired connection works, then the NAS stations work fine. The problem lies within the wireless connection.
As for secpol.msc, it seems that it is only in Vista Business or Ultimate and not in the Home versions. What version are you running?

I agree, if it works wired, that's new information, and I'd hold off on the firmware upgrade. Maybe you have a firewall issue at this point, have you disabled ALL firewalls to see if you can then connect to the NAS?

Hey all

firstly I would have to agree to drop ipv6 but uninstall it totally. Dont just disable it.
also is the nas servers on dhcp? How do you access the data stored on it.usual procedure in SA is to map a drive but I dont know if you have any interfaces for this overseas.

If you work via mapped drive I would suggest making them static as you will have to keep on remapping.also check the router if all the settings on there is correct.

Sorry should have mentioned the wired pc connects to both drives.

I can also get a connection (but i'm guessing via DLNA) to one of the drives and not the other on an Archos media player via wireless.

I can see both drives again wirelessly on a Buffalo Linktheatre.

I've shut down the norton and windows firewalls on the laptop and have been asked for a password on one of the drives (in all the excitement I got it wrong!) but can still get no further than on the attached screenshot i.e. one layer of folders but nothing else.

Thanks again for sticking with this.

The fact that you can access it with a wired connection properly befuddles me. If you connect the same machine to a wired connection, does that solve the access issues?

Me too!

Sorry missed some info you guys asked for.

I'm running Vista Premium and am trying to connect either via a dhcp assigned ip address or mapping the drive. I've not had any problems with DHCP changing the address but have moved to static anyway.

I'll try wiring in the laptop later on and feedback. If it stays like this the laptop can't do what I bought it for!!!

Well theres good and bad news.

Good - Wired connection - excellent, access all areas.
Bad - Wireless connection - no change.

Guessing it's something in the laptops wireless connection then - but really getting out of my depth now.

Any further suggestions??
