Help with Networking?
Here's the situation: I have an old SMC 2804WBR wireless router and a new HP Pavilion dv2402ca laptop. A few days ago, the wireless internet stopped working for no apparent reason. I did not download any new software (apart from Vista SP1, which I downloaded today) that would affect my wireless connection. No spyware/viruses/trojans either. The wireless internet just grinded to a halt.

If I try to connect to the router now, all it will give me is a "limited connectivity" sign. So right now I'm depending on a wired connection, which is extremely frustrating at times.

Here are my stats from ipconfig/all:

BTW I tried the solution on Chicagotech.net....really does not work. Modified the registry..blah blah...still nothing. So is there any other way I can solve this problem?

Have you tried the laptop on any other wireless networks? You'll have to be more specific as to the solutions you tried, Chicagotech.net is a big place.

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
  1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Inter faces\{GUID}
  4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
  5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step.
  6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.

NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.
NOTE2: (GUID) is a mnemonic for the individual subkeys, the actual text "GUID" does not appaer.

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

If your network is secured disable encryption on the router and try to connect that way. If successful you should be able to re-enable encryption and reconnect.

To JohnWill:

First solution: I did that, still nothing.
Second solution: I did that when I first got my computer.
Third solution: Tried but still does not work. Still getting limited connectivity.

I've tried every solution on Chicagotech.net for solving wireless problems, as well as limited connectivity issues. Just doesn't work.

To TerryNet:
Doesn't work. That was the first thing I tried.

Time to consider a new wireless adapter.

BTW, additional thing to consider please: it managed to connect to a public wireless network, meaning it really has nothing to do with the wireless adapter.

That's a highly important BTW! Any other computers connecting to your router?

Reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure. Sometimes that gets things straight, at least for a little while.

Two other computers connected to my router. I reset it already and reconfigured...didn't work.

Apparently, SP1 did something to that adapter because it is working, it just cannot find the DHCP server (router). Check for an updated driver, or roll back the driver that SP1 could have updated and caused it to stop working.

This was a problem that existed before I downloaded SP1, and the wireless adapter works fine with other networks.

If the adapter works fine with other networks, then you know it is either an authentication or encryption error.

If you'd tell us stuff like this, it would make the answers more relevant.
