I am trying to transfer some data between two computers in my home using MSN Live Messenger. It had great connection speed before, and now it transfers about 12kb/s. Both computers when they download from other sites, they transfer at normal speeds. I have AVG on one of the computers, could it be slowing the transfer?

I don't think the antivirus would affect your connection speed. Why not just network the pcs? They are probably already networked in a way.

They are connected to the same router; one desktop; one wireless laptop.
What do you mean by network the pcs? They are. (I think)
Is there another way to transfer?

Have you tried simply browsing to the other computer using Network Places?

Let's see this for each of the computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

So now how can I transfer files through the network?

Try changing the workgroup name of the second computer to WORKGROUP from HOME, which is what it is now.

Did you try browsing through Network Places like I asked?



Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

There is only Local Area Connection in Network places.
I changed WORKGROUP from HOME on desktop.

PING command did work on both computers.

Laptop network places: Wireless Network Connection (connected), Local Area Connection (not connected), 1394 Connection (connected; not sure what this is).
Desktop network places: Local Area Connection (connected).

I remember now, that I could never set up a network because it always gave an error saying that the connection or device is not installed or something like that. But it is. Both get internet access.
Another issue was the desktop (computer#2) is running XP Home and the laptop it XP Pro, so the options are layed out differently which confuses me.

Changing the work group worked and I found the folder to share.
