VPN question
I am going to buy 4 security cameras.
I am going to make them network cameras so that you can view them from a computer..
Would the best want to view them from another location to use a vpn router?

Im no expert on VNP, but use it, and enjoy the advantages and safety. So I just thought id shed my opinion, see if it gives you any ideas.

You have a few options, as far as I can see; going down in security level s here (I hope I don't miss anything out)
Although VPN would be very secure, unless you really need that, I can't see that it is ever worth the effort in setting it up.

-You could password protect the directory on the web server, so ever time you go to the page, you have to enter a username and password.
-You could use SSL (secure socket layer) to ensure the page is secure.
-You could combine SSL, with password protection
-You could, yes, use VPN.

Hope that helps

It will also depend on the cameras and exactly how they connect to the network. Are these stand-alone IP cameras, or a security system with a common controller?

well... i was thinking about using sand alone ip camers.
but i was thinking, it would probably be easier to use a controller so that i could make it so you can see 4 cameras on one screen rather than having to look at each one sperately?
What do you think?

Speakersrock i think that you misunderstood me, I want to use it for security cameras not the security features.
Thanks to both.

Well, the controllers do consolidate the pictures, they can display all of them, or cycle through them on a configurable schedule. Sometimes that is more desirable than having four separate units.

Yeah, if I were you, I would definitely go with a controller.
In the past I have used several stand alone cameras and such for web broadcasting, and have found a controller to seam much more superior to stand along. Makes things much more easy in most cases anyway!
