Multiple ip addresses through LAN?
Hello, I am having a problem that a bit of a pain in the hindquarters. I recently bought an xbox 360 and am trying to get on online. In order to get both my xbox and computer online at the same time I am trying to use a Linksys 10/100 5-Port Workgroup Switch to try to connect everything through LAN. It looks like this

Router ---------------> Linksys switch------------->Computer
------------->Xbox 360

When I run connection tests it says that it failed the ip address test. I'm assuming that is because my computer is using it. Is there any way to use two ip address or to "split" the one I have?

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Actually, if you connect both the XBOX and the computer to that switch off a port from any standard router, it should work fine. Almost all of my stuff is connected via a couple of gigabit switches off my router.

Well for whatever reason it's not connecting. I only have one ethernet port on my router so I can't plug them both in, which is why i'm using the switch. I plugged the cablr from the ethernet port on the router to the "uplink" port on the switch, then conncted both cables through the switch. The computer is able to connect, but the xbox won't...did you need any additional information?

Let's see this for the computer ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I wonder if switching the router cable from the uplink port to one of the other ones... and if the XBOX itself is on DHCP enabled (pulling IP address)

according to this, it looks like you are using ICS and not plugging both machines into the switch.

If you are using an ethernet cable to the XBOX, disable the wireless adapter on the XBOX. I think it's conflicting with your USB wireless on your PC.

Thw wireless is there so I can connect with my laptop. There is no wireless adapter plugged into the Xbox. The computer, modem, router, and Xbox are all connected with cables. What is ICS?

ICS is Internet Connection Sharing. It allows other computers to connect to the internet through another computer.

I assume the XBOX360 has an internal wireless adapter?
*edit: I checked and XBOX360 does not have one

Actually I think I know the problem. You have a public IP address (the IP address from Comcast) on your PC's ethernet connection. I now assume that your router is not a router, but a modem. If that's the case then that's why you are seeing this issue. Comcast has your PC's MAC address registered as the machine connecting to their network and has assigned an IP address to it. When your XBOX is connected, the servers at Comcast is denying it because you are allowed only one IP address per account, unless you purchased more than one IP address.

what is the make and model number of the device you call the router?

Yeah, I screwed up...by router I meant modem, the model number is DCM425C. It is a broadband modem made by RCA for Comcast. The Linksys switch is a 10/100 5-Port Workgroup Switch. Under the barcode it says EB1040. sorry for the confusion...

Then that's the problem. Since comcast accounts are allowed only one device per account (unless you pay for another one) you are pretty much SOL. The solution to this is to either buy a router (some can be about $10, JW seems to know those deals ) and replace the switch with it, or buy the wireless adapter and use the wireless connection on your PC like you do with your laptop, though I would strongly the first suggestion for the least aggravation.

Can't find one for $10, you'll have to make do with an $8 model.

Side Issue: John, before your post I searched dealnews.com for 'wireless' and found a $17 router. After your post I went back to dealnews.com and searched again and found no router deals. Searched for 'Trend' and then for 'router' and got no hits. If you are still finding the above deal, what could be the difference? Maybe we are getting different servers?

I went to DealNews and typed router into the search.

Edit: still works, it's about five deals down.
