Solved: connecting to unencrypted hotspots
Windows XP Pro SP2

Wi Fi card supports WEP & WPA

Where does the encryption begin?

If I go to a public hot spot, that does not support encryption, but access an https site, is the log in information encrypted when it leaves my computer?

I realize that some sites requiring login, such as the nonpariel Tech Support Guy form, do not utilize https.

Thanks for your help.

If you're running on a secure site, which is indicated by the https in the address bar and the padlock on the status bar, the transmissions are encrypted from your browser to the destination site. However, it's generally not recommended to do sensitive transactions using public networks anyway...

The wireless encryption you're talking about is designed to keep people out of the wireless hotspot and not much more. Usually sites (like Coffee Houses) that have public access points do not concern themselves with WHO is connecting. If you want to protect your machine, I may suggest installing a firewall for when you are in public areas because there is no guarantee of security in public Hotspots.

jw & swb:
Thanks.

Yes, jw, I understand the concerns you stated. It is my understanding that some public hot spots provide encryption. Those I have found do so for a fee, to which I have no complaint.

Yes, swb, a firewall, AV & AS software will be used.
