wireless internet randomly disconnects
hey, i am using a toshiba laptop, the important specs below, i guess, and the problem i am having is the internet connection randomly gives out. It actually seems to hold out longer, the more I am continuously going through internet pages or using it in some way, and if I don't do anything, it'll disconnect within a few minutes. It won't disconnect from the network, just the internet. To reconnect I have to either turn the Wi-fi off, then back on or disconnect and reconnect from the computer.

The weird part is that is this problem does not occur when i connect to other wireless network, only at home. Also, the four other computers that use the same internet do not experience this problem either. The router that I use is a Westell 327W.

Are you using the connection software from Toshiba to connect or Windows wireless?

I'm not sure what you mean by that, I am using the wireless that came with the computer. I go through the "network and sharing center", which is what tells me I am connected to the network, but not to the internet. I'd guess the Windows software.

Do you have encryption enabled? If so, have you tried to connect with it turned off?

Please show the following for when you have internet access and again for the time when you have lost it ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

That's too bad; we can usually figure out what's wrong when the IP configuration is lost. My guess is that there is some kind of incompatibility between the router and the adapter. Make sure you have the latest driver for the wireless adapter from Toshiba's web site. Also make sure you have the latest firmware for the router--but be careful about from where you get it; depends on whether it is retail or for a particular ISP.

I have a similar problem--lose internet connection and sometimes can't communicate with the router, and yet maintain what appears to be a good IP configuration. Mine, however, is with a draft 2 N router and a draft 1 N USB adapter--so I'm askin' for trouble with that combination.
