Solved: Hopefully an easy one- but I am at my wits end First things first.
Machinery:
NTT Japan ADSL modem
GW 200 Saxa "Router" (has four ports on the back- WAN, PC, PBX, LINE)
Buffalo LSW-TX-5NS Switching hub
(Set up by another person long gone- the WAN cable is connected to the router which connects to the switching hub through the PC port- this enables internet action through a LAN to two computers- nothing is in LINE, and some seemingly non-related phone cable is plugged through PBX). Im not sure what he did, but I do not think it should matter- as I have tried connecting straight from modem to Wifi Router with no success.
Plus my contribution a new:
MZK-W300NH PCI wireless router.
As far as I can tell the main problem is getting internet data from and through the wireless router.
Right now, although I have tried every possible connection, I have the wireless router connected to the switching hub. Like every other permutation it recognises the "internet" when plugged in. It is exactly the same whether i connected the modem directly to the Wifi router or anything else in between. When the the computer LAN cables are connected through to the Wifi Router internet also cannot be found but fine when connected to the modem, the GW router and hub.
Same with Wireless. Two computers on two different OS "Connect" with excellent signal strength to the Wifi Router. The internet light is lit up (which is does not do say when a non-internet device, like another computer is connected through LAN cable to the device)
Vista shows the connection to the computer and wifi router, but has the "internet" part greyed out. Strangely, a lot of data packets are being sent and received. Neither Firefox nor Win explorer work through the Wifi, or the LANed computers connected to the Wifi router that work through the switcher, router, and modem.
I know the ISP details are correct as the I have confirmed by directly connecting the modem to the individual computers directly. They have been entered correctly into the Wifi router and I have used the set up wizard to connect using PPoE as instructed. It is ADSL so i have no reason to use another connection type, I think.
DHCP is also enabled.
On my Win2000 computer it shows a connection but continually "acquiring a network address" and 0.0.0.0 in the dialogue screen.
In the Wifi Router firmware (192.168.1.1 dialogue screen), a similar problem occurs when looking at the connection status through PPoE where it cannot connect and all of the IP, Subnet, DNS, WINS numerals are all 0.0.0.0
I have been playing with all sorts of info like the details acquired from the IPCONFIG command, entering the local ip addresses, subnet domain mask, primary and secondary DNS into the the Wifi router's firmware, and the network adapter settings/properties- although Ill admitt I am unsure what these are really for, or how to do this skillfully.
But I figure, I shouldnt have to do this, as the the router claims it is a "easy to set up" machine. And it seems to be, except for the small problem that while the router recognises "internet" and the wireless function is working, it can't put that "internet" back out to the devices I require to receive it!
Simply put, after eliminating all other imagined scenarios in my own mind, Why can' t it acquire a network address and all the information it needs?
Help, help, help!!
Edit: when I try to set up a MiniPPoE account with the required information I get error 678 back on the LANed computer. On a "Wireless" computer I get an error 815.
