your dns appears to be unable to resolve ip addresses
Ok, basically for 4 years now my internet has dropped connection at random times every single day!

I can go 4 hours without it dropping, or it can drop every 4 minutes.. its totally at random but incredibly annoying.

I have no idea about computing, networks or anything. I simply know how to work ie explorer and play games.

Windows vista diagnostics say 'Cannot communicate with Primary DNS server'

MSN troubleshoot says 'your dns appears to be unable to resolve ip addresses'

I have spent 4 years going on forums, reading how countless other people have the same exact problem as me, i have tried over 1000 solutions over the years and still the problem is here. Ive had an expert to my house and he couldnt find out why my net drops. I have changed my router 3 times and called all 3 different router companies.. all of them had no idea.. i have called my ISP (Virgin Media) over 50 times and they say the same thing everytime that they havnt got a clue and that aslong as the light on my cable box is on they are sending the signal.

Once the connection has dropped i could be in the middle of a game and i would get the connection lost message, to get the connection back in the past i had to turn the router on/off which generally brought it back on but somtimes it would take 3-4 times to get the connection back. Since i got a new PC with vista i can do the diagnostic which says 'reset the network' so i click that and it usually works too, but again somtimes takes 3-4 times and says 'there still seems to be a problem with your connection'

However if i take the wire directly from the modem and plug it into the one PC in the room where the router is the connection stays on permanently and never goes off?! But as soon as you introduce the router into the equation the connection drops all the time!

Please for the love of all things holy.. can sombody help me! I feel like dropping to my knees and crying.. it has been 4 years now and i am at my very last nerve!

Please Please Please help me heres some information i can give and if you need anymore then please ask!

Im using:

Windows Vista
Netgear router
3 PC's connected to router with wires
1 Laptop connected wirelessly
Virgin Media ISP

If you think you know what the problem is and have a solution please dont just tell me what to do, tell me how to do it aswell because i wont have a clue how to i will very very much appriciate any help!

Here is what i got when i typed ipconfig /all

Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

C:\USERS\RICKY>ipconfig /all

You don't need ipv6 (although I don't suspect it in this case) so ...

Start - Run - ipv6 uninstall - OK

Make sure you have the latest firmware for your router because sometimes a firmware upgrade fixes disconnects.

My suspicion is wireless interference, so please login to the router and disable (or turn off) its wireless signal and see if the disconnects continue.

Since you've already tried 1,000 fixes, and I don't know anywhere near that many, I probably can't help; but I'll try.

I havnt got a clue how to upgrade firmware?!

I went onto google and searched for netgear firmware.. i found a website with a list.

My router is WRG614 version 6..

It has firmware for version 4, 8 and 9..

No 6?!

So i downloaded 4 and 8.. but it came in the form of a .rar.. i unzipped and then didnt have a clue what to do.. there was no .exes to run or anything? :S

I also did the run ipv6 uninstall and it said windows cannot find ivp6 make sure you typed the name correctly
I am useless with computers this problem is never going to get fixed apart from throwing all 4 PCs out of the window!!

Could be the router is dying. Do all PCs connected to the router lose connection at the same time?

If you simply look on the Netgear site, you'll find all the versions for the WGR614, including version 6. Of course, if you're looking for the WRG614 as you stated, it's not surprising you aren't finding anything.

Hmm. Have you tested to see if your other computers are also not connected when one of them gets disconnected? If it's not the router and not the PCs, and you say it's not the modem - then I don't know what else it could be!

thank you i downloaded the firmware from the link u gave, i went into my router area and i uploaded the firmware i think, but not 25 seconds after i did it the connection dropped again for 2 mins.. do i need to upgrade the firmware on all 3 PCs connected to the router? Yes all the PCs seem to drop connection at the same time.

But its weird like if im on a game i will suddenly stop and freeze and other players cannot see my chat, however i can still see them moving around and i can read there chat.. untill i decide to leave the server and reset my router!

I believe the firmware should have updated the router, so you only need to do it from one computer. There's probably some way to see what version of firmware the router is currently running.

As John said always get the firmware for that router from Netgear's site, always make sure you are getting for the correct version, and be sure to spell the name correctly. If you don't have the user guide on CD download it from Netgear's site. After you've downloaded the firmware--probably a .bin--you login to the router and use the 'Upgrade firmware' or 'Install firmware' or whatever the capability is called. Be sure to use an ethernet connected computer.

Well, did you? I mean, did you then repeat the command using ipv6 the second time? Computers are very particular about precise spelling--if you have a slight dyslexia condition you will need to be extra careful when typing commands.

So you did get the firmware upgraded? And still get the disconnects?

Are you now trying the next step--disabling the router's wireless signal?

Since updating my firmware last night, the internet hasnt dropped connection however its unusably slow.

It took 4 mins to this page to load, it takes over 5 mins for most basic websites to just load up when they used to take 3 seconds.. server lists will not load on games like quake 3 and call of duty 4, and they just wont load at all on mmos like lord of the rings online.. in a nutshell my PC is now f'd!

Sorry if I'm being anal about this, but if Windows is saying it can't deal with ivp6 it means you are typing incorrectly. The letters in that command happen to be in alphabetical order.

Networking on all computers is slow or just on yours? If the former, have you tried with just the modem yet?
