Networking Newbie
I'm totally lost when it comes to networking, i've always just connected to my adsl, or wireless via a router and away i go.

But i now want to send some files from a PC to laptop which are both wireless connected to my router. I have no idea how to go about setting this up, can someone point me in the right direction? Maybe to some sort of tutorial or something where i can figure things out!

If it's any use to anyone my router is a Netgear DG834G.

Cheers to anyone who can help me out!

You can find networking tutorials by feeding something like "network tutorial" to your favorite web search engine.

We can probably give you more specific help if you tell us your Operating Systems.

I've tried looking up a few things, but found nothing a i really understand, had a go at using the windows wizards but again to no avail.

The PC im wanting to move the files from is running XP, while the new laptop i want to move them to is running Vista.

Here's some XP info ...

The following will set up a Microsoft Workgroup for File and Printer Sharing assuming the PCs are already networked via router, ad-hoc wireless or Ethernet (directly or using switch or hub).

In Network and Dial-up Connections (Win 2k Pro) or Network Connections (XP) right click on your connection and select ‘Properties.’ If not already there, install or add a check mark for “Client for Microsoft Networks, “File and Printer sharing …” and “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).”

Right click on My Computer, select Properties, and on the Computer Name tab make sure you have a unique computer name and the workgroup name that you want to use for all computers. Change if necessary.

Restart the PC.

You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine.

If using the XP SP2 firewall: Control Panel – Windows Firewall – on the General tab it should be “On” and on the Exceptions tab “File and Printer Sharing” should be selected. (When using this PC on a public network set it to “No Exceptions.”)

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, accept the offer to load other drivers if your other PCs have different Operating System(s).

When you first go into My Network Places there will be nothing there. The first time you click on 'View Workgroup computers' will probably result in great disappointment. It takes awhile (up to 15 minutes) before all the computers in the workgroup get up-to-date and accurate lists of the other computers. Often you can speed up this process via Search for other computers.

When computers show up in My Network Places, double click on one to see its shares. If that includes a printer, you can right click on the printer to connect to it.

I don't have anything "ready made" for Vista, but it's pretty straightforward. The same caution about 3rd party firewall applies. The Vista firewall will be configured fine with your settings in the next paragraph. If you connect the Vista to a public network just make sure the network is designated "Public" and the Vista firewall will go into "stealth" mode (not even let other computers "see" your PC, much less access any files).

Click on the "networking icon" in the Notification Area and then on Network and Sharing Center. Make sure your network is designated 'Private' and then below that set options as you desire; e.g., public sharing, password sharing, etc.

EDIT: (always have to forget something!) You want to set the workgroup name also--similar to XP. XP defaults to "MSHOME"; Vista defaults to "WORKGROUP." I prefer to choose my own (probably equally dumb) name.

Instead of XP's My Network Places you can "see" your networked computers by several ways; maybe the easiest is Start - Network - and then clicking (double clicking?) on the desired computer's icon should show that computer's shares.

I've tried doing what was posted above, aswell as following the steps in this article:

http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1165037

But have had no luck, i can't see the other computer on either machine, i've checked my firewall settings, but no joy. I'm guessing it's me thats doing something wrong though?

Now we can do the fun part--trouble shooting!

To open a Command Window: Start - Run – cmd (command in 98SE) – OK
(if Run not on Vista’s Start menu, just type cmd in the Search box)

To determine a computer's IP address: open a Command Window and type
ipconfig

Now for some troubleshooting:

1. On each PC open a Command window and type
ping IPofOther (where IPofOther is the IP address of the other PC)

Do you get Replies, or do you get packets lost?

If you got Replies,

2. Do the same ping except use the Computer Name of the other computer:
ping NameOfOtherPC

Replies or lost packets?

If you got Replies to either or both,

3. Then
Start - Run - \\IPofOther - OK

With luck after about a minute you should get an explorer window showing the other PC's shares. If not, what is the error message?

OK, so pinging each ip both came back with replies, however pinging the name comes back with a "could not find host . . .".

Run > \\ipofother opened up the explorer window and showed the files on the other pc, however i was unable to acces the folder i had set to be shared to test the whole thing out, it came back with a " . . . is not accesable, you may not have permission to use the network resource". However i can access the files which are already set up for sharing, for example the "public" folder in xp.

So as it stands i can share the files i want to, but i have to move them into a different folder on my pc, rather than just setting their original folders to be shared, which seems strange?

Duplicate the accounts. In other words, If you are using Joe/User on XP, create the same account on the Vista machine. (Make sure the username and passwords are the same on both machines..) If you log into the account on the XP box, you don't have to log into the same account on the Vista box; it just has to be there.

You get the permission error because you really don't have permission. When you come across the network as Joe/User, the remote machine looks at its own database for the account, not your machine. Since the account doesn't exist, you are denied permission. (This is called peer-to-peer networking; your setup.)

I think the accounts will be the same, both have the username "Liam", and both are the only accounts on the two machines, and therefore both administrators.

If thats what you mean?

There are several things that could be causing your problems, with the most likely being a 3rd party firewall. You should look at those again. Moving on to other possibilities please show for both PCs ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following commands:

nbtstat -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Didn't make any change i'm afraid, although now i can ping the pc name and get a response, doing so from each machine, but the files still give the error message saying acces denied.

OK, access denied may be yet another issue. Try this on both machines.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : FIXANON.REG
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be FIXANON.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result.

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Reboot the computer.
