Do I have the correct router?
We recently got a laptop (with Vista).
I also purchased a Linksys wireless router model WRT110.

We seem to be having problems making the router to operate..
We currently have a desktop (windows XP). Our modem is a Westell 6100 and we have Verizon DSL.

My question -- will the wireless router we bought work with everything else we have?
Is there a set of instructions we can easily follow to install it? (we followed the instructions on the CD that came with the router but it's not working)

Is there a better router that will work with the modem that we have?

Well, as soon as the router was installed, we could not connect to the internet. Whenever we opened a browser, it said the page cannot be displayed.
When we disconnected the router, we got our internet connection back.
(I'm talking about the desktop here. We have not even added the laptop yet.)

The Westell 6100 is a modem/router. I believe it's base address is 192.168.1.1, which conflicts with the Linksys with the same base address. Two possible fixes.

Configure the Westell 6100 in bridge mode: http://members.verizon.net/~res08lyg/6100.htm

The other is to configure the base address of the Linksys router to be in a different subnet, say 192.168.2.1. This will eliminate the conflict, but if you need to forward any ports, you'll still have two NAT layers.

IMO, the best option is to configure the modem in bridge mode.

I'm afraid I'm too technologically challenged to follow the configuration instructions, JohnWill.

Is there a particular router I can purchase that is not in conflict with the modem I already have and does not need configuration? Thanks.

Personally, I like putting the modem into bridge mode for the best solution here.

Ok, thanks John.
I will seriously consider this option then.
