Wifi help
Hello firends, sorry if my english is bad

i got some doubts of wifi and i would like to have some answers.

right now im using 1.5MB of internet

i have a toshiba laptop and detects wireless connection and has 4/5 signals, it surf the net really good and i may play games without any lag. i use speedstest to see how much internet it gets, and it shows an average of 1.4MB of internet

i bought this day a G-WIRELESS PCI CARD so that my desktop gets wifi too, the distances between the router and the desktop is like... 1 meter far and the signal is 2/5 and speedtest shows 1.4MB of internet too.

i play some games, surf in the internet and saw some videos in youtube, and everything is fine... but why it detects less signal than the toshiba?

the signal influence the speed? more signal more speed? or... more signal more coverage of internet... thanks

Maybe the antenna is loose. Maybe there is an obstruction in the path between the router and the adapter's antenna--like a printer or the desktop tower itself.

Usually a weaker signal will result in less bandwidth (lower speed). 802.11g has a nominal speed of 54 Mbps (Mega bits per second); actual data throughput under ideal conditions will be about half that. So if your 1.4MB means 1.4 Mbps your internet speed is not straining the Wi-Fi at all.

There can be many reasons for this, one issue may simply be the actual chipset used in the wireless card and the quality of the drivers for the card.

FWIW, I have a Toshiba and an HP laptop here, both have 802.11g adapters. The Toshiba can muster up a fill 15mbit Internet speed test, wirelessly, the HP can only get to about 9mbit for the same test from the same site. Obviously, the HP machine doesn't have the same wireless adapter or the drivers are limiting the throughput. Both tests are with the machines about 6' from the 802.11n router.
