Insight on PPPoE and Vista
Hey Guys,

I am working with a friend of mine and we are having some problems with his PPPoE connection. I work for the ISP so it makes it easier to try and get to that side as well. When I set him up on a static IP he can connect fine and navigate the internet and do whatever. I will then have him connect to the broadband connection and it will connect no problem. Now, we will restart his PC, Vista, and try and connect to the broadband connection. All that ever comes back is a 619 Duns Error. We know the NIC works because with a Static Assigned IP it works fine. He has been able to connect on it before so the username and password are correct.

Let me know what other info I am missing.

Question I am asking is if anyone else has had these kinds of issues with Vista as well? Seems kind of weird to be getting something like this the way it is working. Any insight is a help. Thanks.

Connect to what? Modem? Router?

With no particular error code?

But only sometimes, right? In the above you say he has internet access but then loses it when he restarts the PC.

Hey Terry,

Its a basic Westell bridged Modem. Username/Password going in via the Connection Wizard Via Network and Sharing Center.

The connection will work until the PC is restarted only if it is connected while the static IP connection is up and working.

Static IP in TCP/IP Settings = Good.

Adding PPPoE Connection while connected via Static IP in TCP/IP = Good.

Remove the Static IPs from TCP/IP and Connected to PPPoE = Good.

Trying to connect to the PPPoE service = 619 Error... Vista does not give a solid error message for anything.

Sorry, I'm afraid I'm not being of any help here. Just asking questions.

And one of them was "dumb." The 619 DUNS is specific. Just doesn't make a lot of sense when I read the XP explanation, and did not find anything for Vista.

The only thing I can suggest is to make sure to power cycle (maybe even unplug it for 5 minutes or so) the modem when switching from static to dynamic IP and restarting the PC.

Terry no worries. I have been bouncing my head off of the wall trying to figure this out too.
