Solved: Cannot Connect via Wireless or Ethernet - Please HELP!
System Info: Gateway laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium SP 1
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Belkin N router

On 6/17 after downloading an update for Norton Internet Security 2008, I received the following error message:

'Failed to connect to a windows service: Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrator user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond.'

In order to get rid of this error message, I performed a system restore back to 6/17, prior to the Norton update.

I have tried the following with no success:

I restarted both router and modem, checked settings on wireless adapter (both router and adapter set up to as WPA2-AES.

It keeps on stating it's connected to my network with (Unidentified Network) in front of my network name but I can't connect to IE 7 or Firefox 3.

I also cannot connect via Ethernet when turning off the wireless button (states Unidentified Network).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John

What are the "details about why the service didn't respond"?

Sometimes those firewalls get misconfigured during an update and I suspect that may have happened to you.

While attempting to connect via wireless and ethernet ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

The ipconfig /all makes it appear that no ethernet cable was connected. Does the ethernet LED come on when you connect the cable?

Hello Terry,

Are you referring to the LED lights on the modem, router or laptop?

I was referring to the laptop, but the other end of the cable is also important.

Terry,

I don't see any LED lit up on my laptop when the Ethernet cable is plugged in (Not sure if even has one, it's a Gateway M-6817.

It states access Local Only and Local Area Connection

Under Local Area Connection Status:

IPv4 Connectivity: Local
IPv6 Connectivity: Limited
Media State: Enabled

Very strange that I can't even connection wireless as well.

When the LED lights it doesn't mean a whole lot, but when it doesn't you know the cable is bad or the NIC has died. OTOH I got fooled at first on my neighbors laptop because it (Dell) turns the ethernet off when it is on battery and no cable is connected. If you then connect a cable it will not work until you restart or plug in the AC.

Hi John,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your posting.

There is the possibility that the update you installed for Norton Internet Security did not get applied correctly and is contributing to your connectivity problem. We have a document on Symantec.com that will walk you through various steps to resolve this issue.

Please carefully follow the instructions in the following document:

Internet Connectivity Troubleshooting

Please make sure that you click on the link in Step # 3 for further troubleshooting steps if you are still unable to connect.

Thank you,
Mike

Hello Mike,

Thanks for reaching out to me. After the 6/17 Norton live update corrupted my pc, I restored it back to right before the download. When I tried to access Norton but it wouldn't even open so I decided to uninstall the program and figured once I am back online I would download it from the website and re-enter my security code.

I followed the instructions in your link and I still cannot connect via the internet through wireless or Ethernet and I can't continue the steps because Norton is no longer on my pc. What is strange, the main Norton and Live Update is still listed under the programs list and it won't allow me to uninstall.

I wonder at this point if I should do a factory restore and start from scratch ( I prefer not to take this route but my laptop has been out of commission since 6/17.

Terry,

The laptop is less than a year old and I am thinking since I can't connect via both wireless and Ethernet that the hardware is not the issue (hopefully).

Might do a system restore back to the original Gateway factory settings and start from scratch unless I should take another route?

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Hello John,

I completed the TCP/IP stack repair and I still cannot connect via wireless or Ethernet.

For wireless it states:

Currently connected to:

Unidentified network (with the name of my network)

Access Local Only

LED on router shows laptop via wireless

For Ethernet connection:

Unidentified network (Public network)

Access: Local only
Connection: Local Area connection

So you're no longer getting Media Disconnected for the ethernet? How about another ipconfig /all with the new info.
